Under the supervision of the Manager/Supervisor, the Maintenance I maintains the mechanical, electronic and direct digital control (DDC) and electrical systems owned and operated by the School board includes i.e. plumbers, burner mechanics, electricians and other staff and services. Under the supervision of the Manager/Supervisor, Maintenance I oversees projects involving outside contractors, consultants and other workers.

Qualifications and Experience Possesses a secondary school diploma and a two or three year community college technical/engineering diploma, or provincial Red Seal certification in a related trade, i.e. plumbing, heating, electrical, electronics, DDC. Broad based general maintenance skills and experience with institutional buildings are essential.
A minimum of one year related work experience is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
A valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle is required.
S kills Required Working knowledge of building mechanical systems
Working knowledge of applicable codes i.e. building, fire, electric
Demonstrated experience as a journeyman working in a related trade
Demonstrated Institutional experience
Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS and related regulations
Demonstrated ability to effectively organize others, priorities and schedule projects
Ability to organize and coordinate projects with outside contractors and others
Ability to develop creative solutions for complex problems
Well-developed written and verbal communication skills to effectively communicate within the department, with other departments/trades and with school staff
Working knowledge of word processing software, e‑mail, Internet
Demonstrated ability to work in areas outside of trade certificate i.e. carpenter doing welding
Ability to work as a contributing team member
Willingness and able to upgrade skills i.e. continuing education
Demonstrated ability to work with others, using tact and diplomacy, on the job
Duties & Responsibilities Maintains the mechanical, electrical, DDC and/or electronic systems at all sites throughout the board
Regularly inspects building plumbing, heating and/or electrical systems for defect and deterioration
Meets with inspectors and reviews job permit requirements
Works with other trades as required
Attends staff meetings, as required, to provide reports and provide input to increase efficiencies
Provides written and oral reports on projects to school and administrative staff i.e. written report to the Facilities Services Technical Manager outlining status of project or technical problem with possible solutions
Provides general maintenance services
Attends training courses as required for upgrading and personal development
Demonstrates good attendance and work in a healthy and safe manner
Performs other related duties, as required
