Under the Direction of the Manager Wildlife Research, the Wildlife Biologist II, develops and conducts wildlife research and management initiatives designed to meet the Ministers’ obligations under the NA and to provide a basis for wildlife management policies and practices in the Region and Nunavut (NU). The incumbent administers activities associated with these initiatives and activities, and provides biological review and advice to other sections, agencies, and the public.
The Wildlife Research unit is responsible for providing scientific and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit knowledge and advice to assist with decision making, to develop effective wildlife management practices and to meet national and international obligations regarding wildlife.
The Wildlife Biologist II will work primarily in their home region but may work on projects in other regions or jurisdictions that share NU populations as directed by the Manager. The incumbent will support and maintain a high quality scientifically sound research program and information base on terrestrial wildlife, including but not limited to; caribou and muskox by managing field logistics and purchasing, managing filed data and sample inventory, administering budgets and financial records, developing and writing research proposals and reports.




Wildlife Biologist II will be required to design, lead and conduct research programs, including ariel surveys, interpret data, present findings, demonstrate and improve the quality of wildlife management studies, assist in the development of policy and provide advice. The incumbent will be required to manage performance, assign projects, identify responsibilities and supervise subordinates. The Wildlife Biologist II is also responsible for designing and conducting research that will identify population boundaries, demographic units, recommend changes to Total Allowable Harvest (TAH) levels, and develop or contribute to management plans.
The Wildlife Biologist II will be required to contribute to or lead consultations with Hunters and Trappers Organizations (HTOs), Regional Wildlife Organizations (RWOs) and Nunavut Wildlife Management Board (NWMB) and research bodies outside of Nunavut.
The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized Master of Science in Biology, Environmental Sciences or related fields with a minimum of three (3) years’ directly related experience.
Must hold valid Firearms Possession and Acquisition License (PAL). Ability to be licensed for restricted and non-restricted firearms.
Ability to handle wildlife immobilization drugs.
Possession of a current passport within six (6) months of hire.
This is a Position of Trust and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut,

Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural setting are also considered assets.
