The Commissioning Engineer supports the testing, commissioning, startup, energization, and turnover of utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facilities from pre-commissioning through commercial operation. This role focuses on large, grid-scale energy storage projects that enhance grid reliability and meet growing electricity demand across North America. The position involves close collaboration with engineering, construction, project management, operations, utilities, equipment vendors, and contractors to ensure projects are commissioned safely, efficiently, and in full alignment with project requirements. The role offers significant field exposure, hands-on experience with advanced energy storage technologies, and the opportunity to contribute directly to major energy infrastructure developments. Responsibilities

- Support the development and execution of comprehensive commissioning plans, procedures, schedules, checklists, and testing documentation for utility-scale BESS projects.
- Participate in project meetings with engineering, construction, operations, and stakeholder teams to align commissioning activities with overall project objectives and timelines.
- Review engineering drawings, technical specifications, and project documentation to identify scope gaps, commissioning risks, and constructability concerns, and communicate findings to the project team.
- Coordinate commissioning activities across multiple disciplines, including electrical systems, controls, SCADA, utility interconnection, and equipment vendors, to ensure cohesive and efficient execution.
- Execute and oversee commissioning activities from pre-commissioning through substantial completion, ensuring all systems are tested, validated, and ready for energization.
- Coordinate daily commissioning activities with contractors, OEMs, integrators, and project stakeholders to maintain schedules, manage priorities, and drive timely issue resolution.
- Perform field inspections to verify installation quality, equipment readiness, and system functionality prior to energization, and document any deficiencies or corrective actions.
- Support and witness Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), functional testing, and performance verification activities for major equipment and systems.
- Troubleshoot electrical, controls, communication, and system integration issues during startup and commissioning, working systematically to resolve technical problems and restore functionality.
- Coordinate the commissioning of battery systems, inverters, transformers, switchgear, SCADA systems, communication networks, and medium-voltage electrical infrastructure.
- Interface directly with utilities, authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs), contractors, owner’s representatives, and operations teams throughout the commissioning process to ensure compliance and clear communication.
- Support operator training by helping prepare and deliver turnover documentation, operating procedures, and handoff activities to operations and maintenance teams.
- Document lessons learned during commissioning and recommend improvements to processes, standards, and execution strategies to enhance future project performance.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with vendors, suppliers, contractors, and project stakeholders to foster collaboration and effective project delivery.

Essential Skills
- Minimum 3+ years of experience in utility-scale energy or utilities balance-of-plant (BOP) commissioning.
- Strong understanding of energization safety principles and practices, particularly in high-voltage and medium-voltage environments.
- Proven experience with on-site commissioning activities for large energy projects, including field work and coordination with multiple stakeholders.
- Hands-on experience with electrical systems related to power, transmission, distribution, and balance of plant.




- Ability to perform site and field commissioning, including inspection, testing, and verification of installed equipment.
- Experience troubleshooting electrical engineering issues, including controls, communications, and system integration.
- Familiarity with SCADA systems and protection and controls (P&C;) concepts, including protection relays and related equipment.
- Capability to work effectively with EPCs, OEMs, integrators, and contractors in a field-based project environment.
- Strong communication and coordination skills for interfacing with utilities, AHJs, owner’s representatives, and operations teams.
- Ability to document commissioning activities, lessons learned, and process improvements clearly and accurately.

Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with protection and controls systems and protection engineering is highly beneficial.
- Background in systems engineering, particularly in the context of power and energy infrastructure projects.
- Working knowledge of SCADA systems, including configuration, monitoring, and integration with field devices.
- Experience with inverters, transformers, and switchgear, including commissioning and functional testing.
- Familiarity with high-voltage (HV) and medium-voltage (MV) control systems and associated safety practices.
- Knowledge of power conversion systems (PCS) and inverter technologies used in BESS and solar applications.
- Experience with BESS and photovoltaic (PV) commissioning, including battery energy storage systems and solar installations.
- Background with EPC or OEM organizations and exposure to their processes and standards is an asset.
- Local proximity to the project site is advantageous for day-to-day coordination and responsiveness.
- Understanding of renewables, energy storage, battery storage, and utility-scale solar and energy projects.

Work Environment

This role is primarily site-based, with work scheduled five days per week on location and occasional opportunities for remote work. Standard hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with frequent options to work Saturdays for additional hours on a voluntary basis. The environment centers on large, utility-scale battery energy storage facilities, involving regular interaction with high-voltage and medium-voltage equipment, battery systems, inverters, transformers, switchgear, SCADA systems, communication networks, and balance-of-plant infrastructure. The position offers substantial field exposure, hands-on commissioning work, and collaboration with experienced commissioning professionals, utilities, EPCs, OEMs, and contractors. For individuals located more than 120 km from the site, a living allowance (LOA) may be available, supporting extended on-site assignments. The pay range for this position is $75.00 - $90.00/hr.
