About the Role
Reporting to the Group Financial Controller, the Accounting Manager will provide financial leadership and operational support across multiple business units within the Carlson Construction Group. This role partners closely with senior leadership, project teams, payroll, and operations to ensure accurate financial reporting, robust internal controls, and informed business decision-making.
The ideal candidate will bring experience from the construction, heavy civil engineering, marine construction, infrastructure, or related industries, along with practical knowledge of union payroll administration and collective agreements.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee accounting operations across multiple entities within the Carlson Construction Group.
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
- Ensure accurate accounting for revenue recognition, project costs, payroll, accruals, fixed assets, and intercompany transactions.
- Coordinate financial reporting timelines and deliverables with the accounting team.
- Review and oversee payroll processing and payroll-related reconciliations.
- Monitor cash flow, project funding requirements, and working capital needs.
- Ensure timely payment of subcontractors, suppliers, and service providers.
- Monitor collections, receivables, and customer account performance.
- Support annual budgeting and forecasting initiatives.
- Prepare financial analyses and management reports for senior leadership.
- Coordinate annual audits and prepare supporting schedules and working papers.
- Develop, implement, and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Ensure compliance with Canadian accounting standards, tax regulations, and statutory reporting requirements.
Construction & Operational Support
- Act as the primary accounting resource for project and operational management teams.
- Partner with project managers to monitor project financial performance and risk.
- Provide financial insight on project costing, labour reporting, equipment utilization, and forecasting.
- Support decision-making through data analysis and reporting.
- Identify and implement process improvements that enhance efficiency and accuracy.
- Assist with the interpretation and application of collective agreements as they relate to payroll, labour costs, and project accounting.
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of finance professionals.
- Foster collaboration between Finance, Payroll, HR, and Operations teams.
- Promote a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and teamwork.
- Provide coaching, guidance, and professional development opportunities to staff.
- Drive improvements in financial processes and reporting capabilities.
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
- CPA designation (CPA, CA, CMA, or CGA).
- Minimum 3 years of experience leading or supervising accounting teams.
- Experience within the construction, heavy civil engineering, marine construction, infrastructure, industrial, or project-based sectors.
- Working knowledge of collective agreements, union payroll administration, and labour relations in a unionized environment.
- Strong understanding of project accounting, job costing, and construction financial reporting.
- Experience managing payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general accounting functions.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables and financial analysis.
- Valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Acumatica ERP or similar construction ERP systems.
- Experience supporting multiple operating companies or business units.
- Familiarity with equipment costing, project forecasting, and earned value reporting.

Salary: $100,000 - $125,000 per annum The actual salary offered to the successful candidate will be determined based on job‑related factors, including relevant experience, years of experience, qualifications, internal equity, and Carlson Construction Group’s compensation policy.

Work Arrangement:
