THE OPPORTUNITY The Analyst/Associate plays an integral role in evaluating and supporting primarily direct private equity investments and select fund commitments to strategic partners. They have a key role in investment strategy development and work within deal teams to evaluate investment opportunities and present recommendations to the investment committee. This work includes rigorous analysis, sophisticated financial modeling, and collaboration with outside professionals such as strategic partners, investment bankers, consultants, and lawyers to prepare investment committee materials, conduct due diligence and support deal execution.
Following an investment, the Analyst/Associate remains involved with portfolio companies by monitoring performance and supporting management or strategic partners on value-creation initiatives, such as follow-on M&A;,
financings and strategic initiatives.
WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH The Private Equity department manages a diverse global portfolio of approximately $36 billion in global private equity investments comprising of fund, direct and co-investments. Portfolio growth over the coming years will be driven by an increased emphasis on direct investment, strong partner relationships and actively creating value from the portfolio to deliver superior returns for our clients.
Our department currently consists of ~65 professionals spanning offices located in Victoria, London and New York City, organized into six sub-teams: Direct Investments, Fund Investments, Venture & Growth, Portfolio Performance, Reporting & Analytics, and Operations.
Our Direct
Investments team can be further broken down into six sector-focused teams that cover the Financial and Business Services, Consumer, Healthcare, Industrials, Technology, Media & Communications and Capital Solutions.
WHAT YOU BRING
- An undergraduate degree with high academic standing
- 1-5 years relevant experience in areas such as private equity, investment banking, strategy consulting and corporate development or equivalent experience
- Robust skills in financial modeling, analysis, valuation, and research
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information into clear, concise analysis
- High degree of attention to detail
- Ability to effectively manage projects under pressure and within tight deadlines
- Solid business acumen and judgement
- Ability to function both independently and as part of a high-performance team
- Proficiency in financial databases (CapIQ, FactSet, PitchBook, Refinitiv) and data room analysis
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Investment Analysis and Execution
- Supports the preliminary analysis of private equity investment opportunities, including review of company financials, management meetings, and development of valuation frameworks across methodologies
- Takes a structured approach with appropriate level of analysis in various workstreams of due diligence
- Works as an integrated part of deal teams, supporting the diligence of commercial, financial, tax, legal, governance,
human resource and ESG aspects of prospective investments
- Develops investment thesis and identifies merits, risks, and mitigating factors for potential investment opportunities
- Synthesizes findings, key analysis and supporting documents in an organized manner
- Writes effective screeners, deal alerts and investment memorandums, and prepares IC materials and coordinates the internal review/approval process
- Interacts effectively with GPs and third-party advisors as well as with BCI internal groups (e.g., legal/tax/risk)
- Reviews key credit terms and financial projections
- Prepares analysis in support of executing exits, including buy-hold-sell analysis
- Prepares IC materials related to exit recommendations
Portfolio Monitoring, Value Creation and Oversight
- Monitors assigned investments identifying relevant opportunities and risks including tracking/evaluating performance metrics, ongoing review against original investment thesis, strategic fit, significant changes impacting the company, valuation issues and industry developments
- Plays an active role in value creation plan (VCP) monitoring and prepares analysis for value creation initiatives
- Supports the development of tracking tools and processes to ensure sustained long-term returns
- Prepares Portfolio Review Committee (PRC) materials
- Systematically develops objective and rigorous views on the long-term health and potential of companies within the portfolio
Origination Support & Ongoing Knowledge
- Supports origination in direct deals and Consumer or TMT sector development activities
- Engages in Consumer or TMT subsector knowledge-building
- Plays an active role on GP fund underwrites
- Keeps up to date on industry and private equity trends
- Develops key strategic relationships with co-sponsor partners, consultants/advisors, limited partners, internal resources, and other relevant stakeholders
WHERE YOU WILL WORK These roles will be based in our headquarters in downtown Victoria, BC.
SALARY RANGE The annualized salary range for this Victoria-based role is $132,000 - $145,000.
