Halifax Curling Club Bar Supervisor
Reports To: Halifax Curling Club General Manager
Expected Work Hours: Up to 25hr/week from Sept 2026 – Apr 15, 2027. Thursday-Saturday evening availability required.
Pay: $18/hr + gratuities.
This is a casual, contract position.
Responsibilities
General
- Supporting the General Manager and volunteer teams daily to support bar and event operations.
- Maintaining good member and supplier relations.
Bar Supervision Administering day-to-day operations of the bar for member curling leagues, club events, and rental bookings.
- Bartending
- Maintaining the club: Ensuring that all areas are clean and stocked by maintaining a cleaning duties calendar and performing light cleaning duties when required. Including but not limited to: vacuuming both levels, cleaning the bathrooms (including toilets, sinks, and floors), wiping all table tops, emptying all garbage cans.
- Keyholder: Opening and closing the club and bar for events and regular league nights.
- Customer Service: Welcome members and guests, handle complaints, and keep up quality standards in the HCC bar.
Managing Casual Staff:
- Scheduling staff for bar shifts and assigning cleaning duties
- Communicating with staff and ensuring bar shifts are covered when staff members call in sick.
- Assist General Manager with hiring casual bar staff.
- Training casual bar staff and volunteer bartenders.
- Bar Supervising during larger events– overseeing staff and dealing with any issues that arise.
Administering all day-to-day financial operations as they relate to the bar and casual staff, including:
- Confirming staff payroll hours and submitting to the General Manager.
- Pricing and creating all bar items in the Point-of-Sale system and assisting the General Manager with POS inputs.
- Regularly going through staff bar deposits, confirming all cash and payments have been handled correctly.
- Assisting the General Manager by maintaining records of staff tips owed.
- Assisting with compiling and reconciling daily bar financial data for monthly financial reporting requirements.
Inventory Management:
- Regularly monitoring bar and cleaning/paper products stock levels and managing inventory storage.
- Assisting with picking up supplies from wholesale and liquor stores when required.
- Ordering bar supplies as needed and maintaining good relations with bar sponsors/suppliers.
- Ensuring casual staff are providing up to date stock levels to ensure the bar and cleaning / paper products are always well-stocked for upcoming events.
- Managing and properly storing empty cans and bottles and working with the General Manager to have them picked up.
Additional Bar Duties:
- Assisting the General Manager by bringing specials and products to the bar that maximize revenue.
- Ensuring that the bar and bar staff are compliant with NS Alcohol & Gaming.
- Enforcing NS Alcohol & Gaming liquor laws and safety protocols.
- Looking for ways to improve bar operations and to update bar practices and offerings.
- Working with liquor representatives and any other suppliers where required.
Internal Events & Rentals
- Assisting General Manager and volunteer event chairs with event coordination and on-site supervision for club recreational spiels and social events where required.
- Pre-event organization including cleaning, set-up, picking up supplies, decorating, and organizing staff.
- During event coordination including event bar supervision, overseeing food service/sales, working alongside General Manager and volunteer teams, and any miscellaneous tasks that require attention during events (ie. Taking photos, upstairs lounge atmosphere – music and lighting, etc.).
- On-site event lead during larger rentals and internal club events.
- Providing General Manager feedback during post-event evaluation.
Rental coordination:
- Weekly preparation for all upcoming rentals and going over agreements with the General Manager as required.
- Ensuring the club has all necessary equipment to execute rental packages.
- Scheduling casual bar, event, and curling instruction staff to meet the requirements of rental agreements.
- Maintain a knowledge of HCC’s curling safety overview.
- Ensure all curlers going out on the ice are properly prepared with equipment and safety overview.
- Taking payments for rental bookings.
Assisting with executing major events (1824 Halifax Classic, NSCA Provincial events), including: bar preparation, event set-up, training and supervision of volunteer and casual bartenders, and all miscellaneous tasks that require attention during events. Assisting with Communications & Marketing:
- Maintaining regular communications with casual staff, General Manager, and volunteers where required.
- Assisting the General Manager with maintaining regular communications with membership via Promotional TV screens and flyers for events in the bar and main floor lounges.
- Assisting with the club social media accounts by uploading stories and posts during events.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- 2+ years experience in a Hospitality role: bar/restaurant strongly preferred
- Prior supervisory experience in a hospitality setting is an asset
- Must have Serve Right NS or equivalent Responsible Beverage Service certification
- Strong communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills
- Comfortable leading and supporting a team
- Proficiency with POS systems and cash handling preferred
- Must be able to to lift up to 25kg where required (carrying 20L kegs up a flight of stairs, moving tables, etc.)
- Curling knowledge & basic understanding is an asset
- Valid NS driver’s license and access to a vehicle is an asset
Pay: $18.00 per hour Expected hours: 25.0 per week
