Ottawa
Shepherd’s Fashions is looking for a polished, dependable and committed Retail Cash Specialist to join our team at our Ottawa Train Yards store.
We are looking for someone who wants to build a long-term future with us.
This is an important position within our retail team. We aren't simply looking for someone to operate a cash register or pick up a few shifts. We're looking for someone who takes pride in their work, wants to become excellent at what they do, and is interested in becoming a trusted, knowledgeable and dependable member of our team for years to come.
We want someone who enjoys having responsibility, building expertise and being the person others can count on.
Your Role
Your primary responsibility will be our cash area. We want you to take ownership of this space and become highly knowledgeable about the systems, processes and procedures that keep it running smoothly.
Over time, we want you to know this area inside and out — our systems, policies, processes and customers. You'll become one of our go-to people for transactions, customer orders, telephone inquiries, technology and the many little problems that naturally arise in a busy retail environment.
What You'll Do
Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
- Processing purchases, returns, exchanges and other transactions accurately and efficiently
- Maintaining an organized, professional and well-run cash area
- Balancing cash and completing opening, closing and other daily cash procedures
- Answering incoming telephone calls and assisting customers professionally and confidently
- Greeting customers and providing warm, attentive service
- Placing customer orders and assisting with product, order and availability questions
- Becoming highly proficient with our POS system and other retail technology
- Troubleshooting basic POS, technology, transaction and customer-order issues
- Following established procedures while using good judgement to resolve problems and knowing when to involve a manager
- Managing multiple priorities — customers at cash, telephone calls, orders and requests from the sales floor — calmly and efficiently
- Communicating clearly with customers, sales associates, managers and other departments
- Keeping customer and transaction information accurate and organized
And, like everyone on our team, you'll pitch in wherever you're needed. When the cash area is quiet, that might mean:
- Unpacking,
steaming and hanging clothing
- Replenishing and organizing merchandise
- Tidying racks, fitting rooms and customer areas
- Assisting with transfers, stock organization and other inventory-related tasks
- Supporting sales staff and customers on the sales floor when needed
- Helping the team prepare the store for opening, closing, events and busy periods
- Jumping in on the everyday tasks that keep a retail store looking beautiful and running smoothly
The Person We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who takes their work seriously and is looking for stability and a long-term place to contribute.
You don't need to be the loudest person in the room. In fact, you probably aren't. You're confident, capable and composed. You listen, observe and learn. You take direction well, but you don't need to be told every little thing that needs to be done.
You're comfortable being accountable for your area. If something isn't working, you try to solve it. If something needs attention, you take care of it. If you're unsure, you ask.
You understand the balance between taking initiative and taking over.
You are
- Committed and dependable. You show up, follow through and want to be part of a team for the long term.
- Comfortable with technology. You learn new systems quickly, are comfortable working with computers and devices throughout the day, and aren't intimidated when something doesn't work as expected.
- A practical problem solver. Your instinct is to figure things out, while also knowing when it's time to ask for help.
- Calm under pressure. A ringing phone, waiting customer and transaction issue can happen at the same time, and you can prioritize without becoming flustered.
- Professional and polished. You understand customer-service etiquette and communicate with warmth, discretion and respect.
- Confident without needing to take over. You can take responsibility for your role while respecting the responsibilities of your teammates and managers.
- Coachable. You listen to direction,
receive feedback professionally and are willing to adjust.
- Self-directed. Once you understand what is expected, you notice what needs to be done and get on with it.
- Team-oriented and low-ego. You're happy to help, follow established procedures and contribute wherever you're needed.
- Flexible. Retail changes quickly. Priorities shift, customers need different things and busy days don't always go according to plan.
Customer Service Matters Here
Shepherd's has built long-standing relationships with our customers, and they expect a high level of service when they shop with us.
That means how you answer the telephone matters. How you greet someone matters. How you handle a difficult transaction matters. How you respond when something goes wrong matters.
We are looking for someone who understands that excellent service is often found in the small details — professionalism, patience, good manners, discretion and making people feel genuinely looked after.
Experience & Skills
Previous retail cash/POS experience is strongly preferred. Experience in customer service, hospitality or another service-focused environment would also be an asset.
You should be
- Comfortable handling cash and completing cash procedures accurately
- Confident using computers, POS systems and other technology
- Able to learn current systems and processes quickly
- Comfortable communicating with customers in person and by telephone
- Organized and able to manage multiple priorities
- Available and flexible to work within a retail schedule
Most importantly, we're looking for the right combination of commitment, professionalism, work ethic, judgement, curiosity and attitude.
If you're looking for more than just a few shifts — if you want a role you can take ownership of, become excellent at and make an important contribution to for the long term — we'd love to hear from you.
