Organization Profile
Founded in 1977, the Italian Cultural Centre’s mission is “to promote Italian language, culture and heritage and to share these with other communities”. Created by volunteers, with financial support from the Province of BC and the City of Vancouver, the Centre serves as a vital reference and focal point for the Lower Mainland’s Italian Canadian Community and for all those in the greater community who appreciate Italian culture “Il Centro” has operated for over 40 years and presents a broad spectrum of cultural programming, events and activities on an annual basis.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Kitchen Cleaning & Sanitation
- Clean and sanitize dishes, glassware, utensils, pots, pans, cooking equipment, and other kitchen items.
- Maintain cleanliness of dishwashing areas, kitchen floors, work areas, storage areas, refrigerators, freezers, and other assigned areas.
- Sweep, mop, and maintain kitchen floors throughout the shift as required.
- Clean and sanitize food-contact surfaces according to established procedures.
- Follow daily, weekly, and periodic cleaning schedules.
- Ensure all cleaning and sanitation duties are completed to the required standard.
Dishwashing & Equipment
- Operate commercial dishwashing machines and other cleaning equipment safely and correctly.
- Properly wash, rinse, sanitize, dry, and store dishes and kitchen equipment.
- Ensure clean equipment and utensils are available to culinary staff when required.
- Report malfunctioning or damaged equipment to the supervisor immediately.
- Handle dishes, glassware, and kitchen equipment carefully to minimize breakage and damage.
Waste Management
- Collect and dispose of garbage, recycling, and food waste in accordance with company procedures.
- Maintain clean and organized garbage and recycling areas.
- Replace garbage bags and clean waste containers as required.
- Follow appropriate procedures for the handling and disposal of waste.
Culinary Department Support
- Assist cooks and chefs with basic kitchen support duties when required.
- Help organize and store kitchen supplies, ingredients, and equipment.
- Assist with receiving and moving deliveries when required.
- Keep kitchen storage areas organized and accessible.
- Provide timely support to the culinary team during busy service periods.
Health, Safety & Food Safety
- Follow all company health and safety policies and procedures.
- Follow applicable food safety and sanitation regulations.
- Maintain proper personal hygiene and wear required protective equipment.
- Handle cleaning chemicals safely and according to manufacturer instructions.
- Immediately report spills, hazards, injuries, unsafe conditions, or damaged equipment to management.
- Take reasonable precautions to prevent slips, falls, cross-contamination, and other workplace hazards.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in a restaurant, hotel, catering, or commercial kitchen environment is an asset.
- Food safety or FOODSAFE Level 1 certification is an asset and may be required.
- No formal education requirement; relevant kitchen or hospitality experience is an asset.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to work effectively in a team setting.
- Solid work ethic, reliability, and punctuality.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
Skills: Teamwork: Works cooperatively with chefs, cooks, servers, stewards, and other team members.
Reliability: Arrives on time, follows scheduled shifts, and completes assigned responsibilities.
Attention to Detail: Maintains high standards of cleanliness, sanitation, and organization.
Safety Awareness: Recognizes workplace hazards and follows established safety procedures.
Time Management: Prioritizes tasks effectively, particularly during busy service periods.
Communication: Communicates respectfully and effectively with supervisors and coworkers.
Adaptability: Able to respond to changing operational needs and perform a variety of kitchen-support duties.
Work Ethic: Demonstrates a positive attitude and willingness to take initiative when appropriate.
5. Physical Requirements The position requires the ability to:
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- Bend, reach, squat, kneel, and perform repetitive movements.
- Lift and carry kitchen supplies, dishes, cookware, and other items safely.
- Push and pull carts, garbage bins, and equipment.
- Work for extended periods in a hot, humid, wet, and fast-paced environment.
- Safely handle cleaning chemicals and kitchen equipment.
- Perform repetitive washing, cleaning, lifting, and carrying activities.
Pay: $20.00-$21.00 per hour
