Job Title: Engineer - Tooling

Job Summary The Cutting Tool Engineer is responsible technical leadership in Camtac’s Grindcell. Focused on designing, developing, testing, and improving cutting tools used in machining operations such as milling, drilling, reaming both at Camtac and other Linamar facilities. The role focuses on maximizing tool performance, productivity, tool life, and manufacturing efficiency while meeting customer and production requirements.

Key Responsibilities

- Design carbide, cutting tools.
- Develop tool geometries including rake angles, relief angles, helix angles, flute forms, and chip breakers.
- Create detailed manufacturing drawings and CAD models.
- Select appropriate substrates, coatings, and edge preparations.
- Design special and custom tooling for customer applications.
- Analyze customer machining applications and recommend tooling solutions.
- Develop speeds, feeds, and cutting parameters.
- Troubleshoot tool failures (chipping, breakage, excessive wear, built-up edge, thermal cracking)
- Perform root cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Prepare detailed customer quotations for new tool manufacture and reconditioning services.
- Determine manufacturing cycle times, material requirements, coating costs, and overhead costs.
- Analyze profitability and margin requirements.
- Develop pricing strategies based on volume commitments.

Manufacturing Support and Technical Customer Support

- Support tool grinding, coating, and inspection processes.
- Develop manufacturing methods and work instructions.
- Collaborate with production Team
- Provide tooling recommendations and quotations.
- Conduct customer visits and machining assessments.




- Present technical solutions and cost-saving opportunities.
- Support sales with technical expertise.

Testing & Validation

- Conduct machining trials and performance testing.
- Evaluate tools for life and productivity improvements.
- Analyze cutting forces, chip control, and surface finish.

Required Skills/Experience Minimum of 3 years of experience in tooling design and engineering in a manufacturing environment.

Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

Tool Design Knowledge; drill, reamer and form tools

Machining Expertise (milling, drilling, reaming, grinding)

Coating Knowledge (AlTiN, Alcrona EVO, TiCN, TiAlN, DLC coatings)

Software Knowledge Preferred (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Numroto)

Required Analytical Skills; tool failure analysis, GD&T; interpretation, manufacturing cost

Ideal Candidate An ideal Cutting Tool Engineer combines strong machining knowledge with tool strong tool design, to troubleshoot tool performance issues in the field,



and can develop innovative tooling solutions that improve productivity while reducing manufacturing costs. Positive people skills as this role involves communicating among several operational functions.

Academic/Educational Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.

Working Conditions

40 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

In-office work with time spent in the production area as required.

Please note: Hybrid schedule is only applicable to specific Linamar locations. All schedules and changes to working hours must be approved by the department manager. Schedule is subject to change based on the discretion of the department manager.
