Lumen IT

Calgary

Lumen IT is a managed IT services company in downtown Calgary. We look after the technology for small and medium businesses across the city. We're hiring an entry-level technician, and we mean entry level - if you're great with people and genuinely into technology, we'll train you on the rest.

WHO WE'RE ACTUALLY LOOKING FOR

You're the person your family and friends call when something breaks. You've had a job dealing with the public - retail, restaurants, trades, a call centre, anything. If that job involved technology - Best Buy, an Apple Store, a phone repair shop, a carrier store - even better, though it's not required. You're curious, you look things up, and you don't panic when you don't know the answer.

You do not need IT experience. You do not need a degree. You do need a driver's licence and a reliable vehicle, because most of this job happens at our clients' offices.

WHAT THE JOB LOOKS LIKE

About 70% of your week is out visiting clients - three to six stops a day around Calgary and nearby towns like Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks and Chestermere. Offices, retail shops, construction sites. You'll be setting up laptops and phones, fixing printers, sorting out network problems, and showing people how to use their tools. You're the face of Lumen IT at every one of those stops.

The other 30% is help desk from our downtown office - answering calls and emails, resetting passwords, working through problems, and passing the hard ones to a senior tech.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN HERE

Windows 10/11 and Apple devices. Microsoft 365 and Active Directory. Networking, printers, VoIP phones, device management. You'll see dozens of different businesses instead of one, so you'll cover more ground in six months than you would in two years at a big company's help desk.

REQUIREMENTS

- Customer service experience - it does not need to be in IT
- Genuine curiosity about technology - you like understanding how things work and you'll dig into something unfamiliar
- Comfortable using both Windows and Mac
- Valid driver's licence and reliable vehicle, with business-use insurance coverage (we reimburse the difference from your personal premium)
- Legally able to work in Canada, and able to pass a background check and a driver's abstract
- Living in Calgary or the surrounding area
- Able to lift and move computer equipment

NICE TO HAVE - GENUINELY NOT REQUIRED Retail tech experience (Best Buy, an Apple Store, a phone repair shop, a carrier store, a tech desk) - it's the closest thing to this job. Hands-on tinkering of any kind (building or repairing PCs, a home lab, being the person friends and family call), CompTIA A+ (we'll pay for it if you don't have it), any help desk or MSP experience, exposure to Microsoft 365 admin or Intune, basic networking knowledge, point-of-sale or VoIP systems.

If you meet the requirements and none of these, please apply anyway. We mean that.

PAY AND BENEFITS

- $50,000/year to start
- We review pay at six months and again at one year. Technicians who progress to running client visits independently move up - we'd much rather promote you than hire someone else.
- Health,

dental and vision after a three-month probation
- Two weeks vacation plus sick leave
- We pay for certifications and give you time during the work week to study

- Company laptop and tools
- Mileage reimbursed at the CRA prescribed rate
- Business-use vehicle insurance - we reimburse the difference from your personal premium
- On-call weeks are paid

HOURS AND CONDITIONS Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. On-call one week a month - in practice a handful of calls. On-call weeks are paid. You'll split your time between our downtown office and client sites.

This role is fully onsite. There is no work-from-home component. Please don't apply if you're looking for work from home.

OUR HIRING PROCESS A fifteen-minute phone call, then a practical conversation about how you'd handle a few real situations, then an in-person interview with the team, then references and an offer.

Typical timeline is 1-2 weeks for qualified candidates, and you'll hear back from us either way.

Lumen IT is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion. We accommodate disabilities in accordance with the Alberta Human Rights Act. If you need accommodation during the process, contact [email protected].
