Job Title: General Machinist
Job Summary The General Machinist sets up and operates various machines to precisely cut, grind, or shape metal, plastic, or other materials to create or modify parts and products, ensuring adherence to safety protocols at all times while promoting the company core values. This role supports and exemplifies Linamar’s leadership behaviors, emphasizing a culture of safety and respect.
Responsibility
- Ensure Compliance with legislative Safety Standards and adhere to all company safety policies to maintain a secure working environment.
- Interpret technical drawings, read and follow blueprints and written instructions to produce precise replacement and new parts, ensuring precision quality.
- Support Lean Initiatives, maintain and support Lean initiatives, including 5S practices, to ensure an organized, safe, and efficient work workplace.
- Utilize knowledge of machine shop theory, mathematics, and material properties to operate equipment.
- Conduct pre-use inspections of conventional equipment to identify and address any safety issues before operation.
- Accurately compute dimensions and tolerances and set controls to regulate machine speeds and feeds, ensuring safe and precise machining.
- Use precision measuring instruments to verify the accuracy of machined parts and tooling, maintaining high quality standards.
- Provide technical guidance and training to apprentices and less experienced machinists, emphasizing safe equipment use and best practices.
- Ensure regular maintenance is performed on equipment, and ensure cleanliness and organization in the tool room, and power down and lock out equipment at the end of the shift.
Academic/Educational Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED is essential for basic skills in mathematics, reading, and writing.
- Completion of a relevant program in machining or a related field.
- A General Machinist license is preferred, or enrollment in an apprenticeship program.
Required Skills/Experience
- Thorough understanding and application of safety protocols, including the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to safety standards.
- Ability to accurately measure and set up tools and machinery, including monitoring speed settings and feed rates.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting scale and assembly drawings to understand critical dimensions, machining tolerances, and identify potential issues.
- Capability to judge the suitability of tools and equipment for specific machining jobs and adjust as necessary.
- Commitment to ongoing education and training in machining practices, safety procedures, and new technologies.
