ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

As a Land Guardian, you will act as the eyes and ears of Fort Nelson First Nation’s traditional territory. You will conduct land patrols, monitor the environment and wildlife, support archaeological research, and monitor land use, including hunting.

You will also help plan and participate in programs that steward the Nation’s lands and resources in accordance with our traditions, cultural values, economic goals, and Treaty Rights.

Working alongside Elders and youth, Land Guardians support cultural revitalization, land stewardship, and the protection of our rights, protocols, and laws.

Approximately 80–90% of your time will be spent on the land, travelling through bush and wilderness areas, sometimes in demanding conditions and with overnight stays. The role also includes meetings, data entry, and other office duties.

At times, you may interact with upset or challenging individuals and will be expected to use tact, sensitivity, and diplomacy to promote understanding, acceptance, and respect.

WHAT YOU BRING

Knowledge & Experience

- Minimum grade 10 education
- Experience working collaboratively in a team setting
- Knowledge of the traditional territory; and robust land and stewardship ethics

Skills & Abilities

- Ability to follow directions and work independently
- Ability to hike 5 kilometers with a backpack
- Good communication skills and ability to interact with visitors and resources users in a polite and positive manner
- Demonstrated reliability and strong work ethic in previous jobs
- Organized, motivated, and the ability to take initiative and works well with other

Other Requirements

- Interest in FNFN heritage, traditions, and cultural values.
- Valid BC Driver’s License and Drivers Abstract.
- Compliance with BC Immunization program and TB Screening.




- Must successfully pass drug and alcohol testing and maintain passing results as an ongoing requirement of the position.
- Compliance with BC Immunization program and TB Screening.
- Satisfactory completion of a police information check.
- Ability to provide own transportation to work.
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and Drivers Abstract.

Optional/Assets

- Ability to use and maintain vehicles including trucks, ATVs, and boats
- Previous experience in field data collection
- Ability to use GPS equipment, tablets, and Microsoft Office
- Willingness to travel in a helicopter
- Ability to speak Dene and/or Cree.

WORK SETTING The regular work schedule is Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., 35 hours per week. The work can be physically demanding, and at times requires travel by skidoo, ATV, helicopter, or boat, and hiking to sites. Moving field equipment to remote sites by hand or backpack is occasionally required. Safety protocols must be adhered to, with PPE as required. Responsible for driving a company owned vehicle to and from the field. Flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends are required. Overtime as approved by the Supervisor(s).
