Description

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) works as a member of the multidisciplinary health care team, collaborating in the delivery of holistic care and support to patients/residents and families. The LPN practices to full scope, applying professional nursing knowledge, clinical judgment, critical thinking, and communication skills to support safe care and positive health outcomes. The role is committed to providing person-centred, culturally safe, and inclusive care that respects the diverse backgrounds, experiences, values, and needs of patients/residents and families.

The LPN contributes to a culture of learning and professional practice excellence by orienting, coaching, mentoring, and supporting the development of staff, students, and learners.



The role promotes knowledge sharing and collaborative practice to enhance individual, team, and organizational effectiveness. The LPN fosters an inclusive learning environment that encourages respectful engagement and equitable opportunities for growth and development.

The LPN demonstrates leadership within their scope of practice by coordinating care activities, supporting effective team functioning, and contributing to quality improvement and patient/resident safety initiatives. The incumbent fosters professional relationships with patients/residents, families, colleagues, physicians, and other members of the health care team, promoting a culture of respect, collaboration, and belonging. The LPN practices in accordance with applicable legislation, regulatory standards, professional ethics, and the Mission, Vision, Values, policies, and procedures of Covenant Health.

Required Qualifications Required Qualifications: Graduate of a Practical Nursing program or recognized equivalent required. Active registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides of Alberta (CLHA).

Basic Life Support Healthcare

Provider (Level C) required.

Additional Required Qualifications

Minimum of 1 year of experience working with individuals with dementia or in a similar geriatric care setting. Basic understanding of dementia care principles, including techniques for managing challenging behaviors. Strong clinical skills and the ability to perform a range of nursing tasks with precision and care.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment. Ability to demonstrate patience, empathy, and professionalism in all interactions with residents and their families.

Preferred Qualifications

Certification or additional training in dementia care (e.g., Certified Dementia Care Specialist).

Certification or training in crisis management techniques, such as Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) or Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI).

Experience with electronic health record (EHR) systems, such as Connect Care. Training in non-pharmacological interventions and behavior management techniques.
