Qualifications

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:

- A bachelor’s degree or college diploma in Computer Science or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- Directly applicable industry certifications are an asset.

EXPERIENCE:

- Must have a minimum 3 years of work experience as a system administrator performing analysis, design, deployment, maintenance and support of enterprise level Linux platform systems in higher education or large business environment.
- Must have experience with the deployment, configuration and support of enterprise level web infrastructure and middleware platforms.
- Must have experience in planning and estimating work related to deployment, upgrade of Linux platform systems and middleware.
- Must have experience collaborating with diverse project teams including technology users, infrastructure and application specialists, vendor sales and technical support staff, project managers and project sponsors.
- Must have experience with supporting Java, JavaScript, PHP environments.
- Experience with operating system / middleware platform support and administration of an enterprise level ERP, CRM or HRIS system is desirable. Experience with Ellucian Banner is considered an asset.
- Experience with administration of one or more of Dell, NetApp, and VSAN is an asset.
- Experience administration of Data Protection platforms is an asset.
- Experience with Linux platform configuration management and automation tools is an asset.
- Experience with system security hardening is an asset.
- Experience with public cloud platforms in considered an asset.
- Experience with High Performance Computing systems is considered an asset.
- Experience with Microsoft Windows Server 2022 and Microsoft Windows Server 2025 is considered an asset.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

- Working knowledge of Red Hat Enterprise Linux platform is required. RHCSA certification is considered an asset.
- Demonstrated knowledge of web and middleware infrastructure including (Tomcat / Wordpress / Drupal / Varnish / NGINX ) is required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of configuration management and automation tools (Ansible / Chef / Octopus / Terraform) is an asset.
- Demonstrated knowledge of database platform deployment and configuration of MySQL and Postgres is an asset.
- Demonstrated knowledge of programming and scripting using Python,



Bash and Git is an asset.
- Working knowledge of common networking technologies including IPV4, DNS, and DHCP is an asset.
- Working knowledge of Windows Server and Active Directory, Active Directory Federation Services and integration technologies (SAML, LDAP, Azure AD Connect, and ADFS) is considered an asset.
- Working knowledge of VMware server virtualization and Network Attached Storage is considered an asset.
- Working knowledge of cloud platforms (Azure, AWS) is considered an asset.
- Working knowledge of containerization technologies (Kubernetes, Docker, Podman) is considered an asset.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.

Key responsibilities

Design and Development

- Contributes to the review of requirements/specifications and/or client requests for new solutions or changes to existing solutions.
- Creates estimates of effort for the analysis, design, testing and implementation of solutions within scope of responsibility.
- Analyzes requests, evaluates alternative solutions, and provides recommendations within IST team structure.
- Develops and tests new and/or modified solutions, ensuring they meet the client specifications and performance requirements, and are delivered within effort estimates.
- Creates Test Scripts, Test Plans, and maintains logs for recent and revised systems.
- Assists with documentation related to analysis, design, development and systems.
- Assists with the creation of Transition to Operation documents, change requests, and change management documentation.
- Prepares required operational documentation, ensuring that the operational aspects of the solution adhere to IST standards, and distributes appropriately.
- Adheres to policy, IST guidelines, and team guidelines.

Maintenance and Support
- Diagnoses reported problems with systems. Escalates issues as appropriate.
- Identifies corrective actions required. Implements corrective measures for Priority 3 tickets. Priority 1 and 2 tickets are resolved under the direction of senior Technology Services staff. Evaluates and assesses the impact of scheduled patches/updates. Performs patches/updates.
- Performs patches/updates.
- Provides administration support as required within scope of responsibility (such as installation, configuration, tuning, provisioning, de-provisioning, monitoring, etc.).
- Works proactively with the Incident Manager to resolve issues and restore system functionality on Priority 3 tickets. Assistance with Priority 1 and 2 tickets is directed by senior Technology Services staff.
- Adheres to IST processes (incident response, request fulfillment,



change management, etc.) and ensures requests and incidents are resolved as per agreed upon SLA's.
- Communicate with clients and the Service Desk regarding the status of problem investigation and resolution.

Quality, Collaboration, and Leadership
- Participates in quality activities such as requirements, design, code, and testing reviews.
- Provides data for metrics.
- Collects feedback from various sources regarding potential projects, process improvements and initiatives to improve service delivery and shares with senior Technology Services staff. Contributes to the development, modification and implementation of new or revised IST policies, procedures and standards.
- Participates with other IST Teams, vendors and clients during implementation of vendor-supplied systems and upgrades.
- Evaluates new products as requested.
- Develops and maintains positive working relationships with vendors; contacts Vendor as requested and escalates issues as necessary.

Self-Development
- Maintains and updates professional skills and knowledge and integrates into the work environment new knowledge acquired through continuing education and professional development opportunities.
- Takes courses, seminars, or attends conferences, as needed and when available.
- Uses departmental resources such as books, CBT courses and test environments to self-learn as required.
- Continuing development in tools and processes is an important aspect of this position.

Health and Safety
- Completes all mandatory safety education sessions and re-certifications. Adheres to all workplace health and safety regulations, policies and safe work practices.

Other
- Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
- Participate in the on-call process as required.
- Provides in office support to Bannatyne and Fort Garry Campuses and other satellite locations.
- Occasional overtime is required.
