CURIE (Canadian Universities Reciprocal Insurance Exchange) delivers cost effective, and solutions based, commercial insurance and risk management services to its members; Canadian post-secondary institutions in 9 provinces across the country. CURIE has offices in Ontario and Calgary, Alberta, and this opportunity is for our Alberta office. The successful candidate will be based in Alberta, preferably in the Edmonton or Calgary area.

The Loss Control Consultant supports CURIE’s commitment to providing industry-leading loss control services across Western Canada. This role conducts property loss control inspections, supports risk improvement initiatives and recommendation management, and builds strong relationships with member facilities and risk management teams.

Work Location and Travel

- This role offers the flexibility to work remotely from a home office in Alberta while supporting CURIE members across Canada.
- The successful candidate will be required to travel regularly to member institutions to conduct on-site loss control inspections, assessments, and consultations.
- Occasional travel to CURIE's head office will also be required throughout the year for team meetings, training, and organizational events.

Key Responsibilities

- Conduct property and liability building risk assessments, including Stage 1 building reviews, and prepare clear, timely engineering survey reports with photographs and practical recommendations.
- Participate in new building, major renovation,



and construction reviews to support consistent standards of care and recognized risk-control practices.
- Conduct science laboratory inspections, including reviews of equipment condition, chemical storage, handling procedures, and general laboratory safety.
- Support virtual loss control review programs and other specialized reviews, including COPE, claims, underwriting, premises liability, construction, laboratory, and related risk reviews.
- Assess property risk scenarios and provide practical property and liability risk control advice to support member risk mitigation.
- Work collaboratively with internal teams, including underwriting and claims, to support a coordinated risk management program.
- Stay current on emerging property and operational risks, technology, building and fire codes, NFPA standards, and recognized industry guidance.
- Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with CURIE members.

Qualifications

- Diploma or degree in Engineering, or equivalent experience; insurance industry knowledge is considered an asset.
- 3 to 5 years of experience in property risk control, facilities engineering, fire protection, commercial insurance, or a related field.
- Working knowledge of Canadian building and fire codes, NFPA standards,



commercial property protection systems, construction and building systems, and science laboratory chemical health and safety requirements and codes.
- Ability to read and assess sprinkler, fire pump, suppression system, architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical plans, including hydraulic reviews.
- Understanding of property loss scenario engineering concepts, including Maximum Foreseeable Loss, Probable Maximum Loss, and Normal Loss Expectancy.
- Robust report-writing, analytical, relationship-management, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative national team.
- Experience with higher education institutions or complex commercial properties is considered an asset.
