Postdoctoral Fellowship in III-V Compound
Semiconductor Optoelectronics Fabrication
Overview The Epitaxial Nanostructures and Materials (ENM) Research Group led by Prof. Ryan Lewis in the Department of Engineering Physics at McMaster University is seeking to hire a Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) to investigate the nanofabrication of III-V optoelectronic devices.
This position is part of a collaboration between McMaster University, the Canadian Photonics Fabrication Centre (CPFC), Optiwave and the University of Ottawa aiming to establish a made-in-Canada InP-based multi-project wafer service at CPFC, and to cross-qualify McMaster and CPFC growth and photonic device fabrication, enabling collaborative R&D.; The PDF is expected to contribute to the fabrication of InP-based lasers and optical elements, which could include III-V metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), wafer processing, dielectric deposition, diode laser fabrication and characterization of epitaxial layers and test devices.
Current research activities in Dr. Lewis’ lab include developing a novel platform for direct epitaxy (MOCVD) of III-V semiconductors on Si via ultrathin strain-relaxed SiGe buffer layers, III-V quantum dot growth for both laser and quantum photonics applications and nanowires-based bio sensors. The current group consists of one PDF, seven graduate students and one undergraduate.
The PDF will have access to excellent on-campus facilities, including the semiconductor growth and fabrication facilities in the Centre for Emerging Device Technologies (CEDT), the Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy (CCEM), the McMaster Analytical X-ray Diffraction Facility (MAX)
and the Brockhouse Institute for Materials Research. These world-class research facilities are located at McMaster University—one of Canada’s top universities, located in Hamilton, Ontario. The vibrant city of Hamilton is located on the shores of Lake Ontario and is part of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, a multicultural metropolitan area with a combined population of over seven million.
Qualifications The applicant is expected to have earned (or to soon defend) a PhD in Engineering, Physics, Materials Science or a related discipline, and to have experience in III-V optoelectronics—at least one of optoelectronics fabrication, MOCVD, dielectric deposition, photonic integrated circuit fabrication, optoelectronics characterization.
Funding and Duration The term of the fellowship is initially for 12 months, with the possibility of renewal. The preferred start date of the appointment is Fall 2026. The normal hours of work are 35 hours per week. The salary will range from $50,000.00 - $70,000.00, with benefits, provided in accordance with McMaster University guidelines, and commensurate with skills and experience.
Pay Transparency Statement The starting salary will not be less than $50,000.
