The Opportunity
Capstone Infrastructure Corporation is seeking a Senior Project Manager, Thermal Projects to lead the planning, execution and delivery of complex thermal generation projects across Canada. This newly created role will oversee projects from concept development and business case approval through engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and transition to operations.
The successful candidate will lead multidisciplinary teams and be accountable for scope, schedule, budget, safety, quality, commercial performance, risk and stakeholder management. The role works closely with plant operations, asset management and corporate teams to deliver safe, reliable and commercially sound project outcomes.
This position reports directly to the Vice President, Project Execution and is based remotely within Canada, with travel to project sites and vendor locations as required. Toronto and Calgary office options are also available.
Key Responsibilities
Capital Project Leadership
- Lead new thermal generation capital projects, including turbine and generator work, balance-of-plant projects, equipment replacements, reliability initiatives, life-extension programs and environmental compliance projects.
- Establish project scope, execution strategy, governance, contracting approach, schedule, budget, cost controls and performance measures.
- Ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within approved budgets and in accordance with applicable requirements.
Commercial and Contract Management
- Lead procurement strategies and commercial negotiations for engineering, equipment, construction and specialized technical services.
- Oversee contractor performance, contract administration, change orders, claims, contingency use and commercial risk.
- Maintain accurate cost forecasts and provide timely recommendations when scope, schedule or budget pressures emerge.
Outage and Operational Integration
- Coordinate project work at operating assets with plant operations and maintenance teams.
- Provide project leadership for planned outages and major maintenance events, where assigned.
- Ensure designs support long-term reliability, maintainability, operability and plant performance.
- Oversee commissioning, performance testing, documentation,
training and turnover to operations.
Risk, Safety and Regulatory Compliance
- Identify, assess and manage safety, technical, commercial, schedule, environmental, permitting and operational risks throughout the project lifecycle.
- Ensure project activities comply with applicable laws, approvals, permits, codes, standards and Capstone requirements.
- Promote a strong safety culture and hold contractors and project team members accountable for safe work practices.
Leadership, Governance and Stakeholder Management
- Lead multidisciplinary teams that may include employees, consultants, owner’s engineers, construction managers, contractors and equipment suppliers.
- Provide clear project reporting, forecasts, risk assessments and decision recommendations to senior and executive leadership.
- Build effective relationships with contractors, regulators, utilities, community stakeholders and project partners.
- Coach and mentor project team members while supporting accountability, quality work and continuous improvement.
- Contribute to a positive, inclusive and engaging work environment.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management or a related discipline. An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.
- Professional Engineer designation is preferred. Project Management Professional designation is an asset.
- At least 7 years of progressive experience delivering complex industrial, power generation or major thermal projects.
- Demonstrated experience with gas-fired generation or comparable heavy industrial facilities.
- Experience managing major capital projects with significant technical, commercial, safety and operational complexity.
- Robust knowledge of project controls, scheduling, cost forecasting, procurement, contract administration,
construction and commissioning.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and managing consultants, contractors and equipment suppliers.
- Strong commercial judgment, negotiation skills, business acumen and risk management capability.
- Ability to communicate clearly with technical teams, executives and external stakeholders.
- Ability to travel within Canada as required.
