Job Summary:
The Utility Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining specialized heavy equipment to support sewer and water system installation, rehabilitation, and maintenance. This role requires expertise in trenchless pipe replacement methods, including horizontal boring and cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) technologies. The operator will work on infrastructure projects to enhance Alberta’s municipal and industrial utility systems while ensuring safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate heavy equipment, including excavators, backhoes, skid steers, directional drills, and trenching machines for sewer and water utility projects.
- Utilize trenchless pipe replacement technologies, including:
- Horizontal boring for underground pipe installation with minimal surface disruption.
- CIPP lining for rehabilitating aging pipelines without excavation.
- Perform excavation, trenching, grading, backfilling, and compaction to prepare job sites.
- Conduct pre-operational equipment inspections and routine maintenance to ensure proper functioning.
- Follow Alberta Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) regulations and ensure compliance with municipal and provincial codes.
- Transport and position materials, pipes, and equipment using dump trucks, trailers, and other transport vehicles.
- Work closely with site supervisors, engineers, and municipal officials to coordinate utility installation and repair activities.
- Assist in utility locating, dewatering, shoring, and confined space work as needed.
- Maintain accurate logs and reports on equipment use, maintenance, and job progress.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Proficiency in operating excavators, backhoes, skid steers, and trenching equipment.
- Experience with trenchless technology, including horizontal boring and CIPP installation.
- Strong knowledge of utility construction methods for sewer and water infrastructure.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, municipal utility maps,
and work orders.
- Mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting and basic maintenance of heavy equipment.
- Understanding of Alberta OHS standards, trenching safety, confined space procedures, and PPE requirements.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
Experience Requirements:
- Minimum 2-3 years of experience in heavy equipment operation for sewer and water system projects.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of training or certification in trenchless pipe replacement methods (preferred).
- Valid Alberta Class 5 or higher driver’s license with air brake endorsement.
Preferred Certifications (MUST HAVE):
- CSTS-2020, WHMIS 2015, Confined Space Entry, Ground Disturbance II, First Aid, H2S Alive, and Fall Protection
Work Workplace:
- Work is conducted outdoors in Alberta’s varying weather conditions, including extreme cold.
- Requires physical endurance, including prolonged equipment operation, lifting, and confined space work.
- May involve hazardous job sites, including working near underground utilities.
