Global Islamic Centre (GIC) is a Canadian registered charity providing meaningful, engaging, and age-appropriate Islamic education for children and families in Milton and Oakville, Ontario.
Our approach is child-centred and focused on helping children develop a loving and purposeful relationship with Islam. We aim to create a welcoming, respectful and safe learning environment where children can ask questions, participate actively, and understand how Islamic teachings connect to their everyday lives.
Role Description
GIC is seeking a qualified and experienced Weekend Islamic School Teacher to teach children and youth in our Sunday Islamic education program in Milton, Ontario.
The successful candidate will combine robust classroom and child-development skills with solid Islamic knowledge . We are particularly interested in candidates with professional qualifications and experience in education, such as Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE), Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT), Montessori educator, Bachelor of Education, ECE diploma, or equivalent recognized teaching qualifications .
The teacher will be responsible for delivering engaging, age-appropriate lessons in Quran and Islamic Studies, preparing and following weekly lesson plans, managing the classroom effectively, supporting student engagement and participation, and contributing to a positive learning workplace.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach age-appropriate Quran, Islamic Studies, Seerah, Islamic manners and character development .
- Deliver lessons in a way that is engaging, understandable and meaningful for children.
- Plan and prepare weekly lessons, activities, discussions, crafts and other learning experiences as appropriate.
- Maintain a structured, respectful and positive classroom environment.
- Adapt teaching approaches to different ages, learning styles and individual student needs.
- Encourage children to ask questions and develop a meaningful understanding of Islam rather than relying solely on memorization.
- Support students in Quran reading, memorization and correct pronunciation as appropriate to their level.
- Monitor student progress and provide constructive feedback.
- Communicate professionally with parents and administration when required.
- Collaborate with other GIC educators and administration regarding curriculum, classroom practices and student needs.
- Participate in staff meetings, professional development and required training.
- Follow GIC's child-safety, classroom-management and professional-conduct policies.
Required Qualifications & Experience
Education / Child Development
Candidates should have one or more of the following :
- Registered Early Childhood Educator ( RECE ) in good standing with the College of Early Childhood Educators.
- Ontario Certified Teacher ( OCT ) in good standing.
- Early Childhood Education diploma or degree.
- Bachelor of Education or other recognized teaching qualification.
- Montessori teaching qualification or significant Montessori classroom experience.
- Equivalent recognized education/child-development qualification and relevant classroom experience.
Relevant professional experience is highly valued , particularly experience working with children in:
- Montessori schools
- Child-care centres
- JK/SK or elementary classrooms
- Private or independent schools
- Islamic schools or weekend schools
- Religious education programs
- Other structured educational environments
Candidates with substantial classroom experience working with children, even where their primary qualification differs from those listed above, may also be considered . Islamic Education Qualifications & Knowledge
Candidates must demonstrate strong foundational knowledge of Islam and the ability to teach Islamic concepts accurately and appropriately to children.
Required
- Strong knowledge of Quran and core Islamic teachings .
- Ability to read the Quran accurately, with correct pronunciation and appropriate application of basic Tajweed .
- Strong understanding of essential Islamic beliefs, worship, manners, character and everyday Islamic practices.
- Ability to explain Islamic concepts to children in a clear, age-appropriate and thoughtful manner.
- Ability to distinguish between established Islamic teachings and personal opinions or cultural practices.
- Willingness to teach Islam according to reliable and authentic Islamic sources.
Islamic educational qualifications are strongly preferred , such as:
- Formal Islamic Studies education.
- Quran memorization or formal Quran studies.
- Tajweed certification or recognized Quran teaching qualification.
- Alim/Alimah or equivalent Islamic studies program.
- Recognized Islamic institute or university studies.
- Ijazah in Quran/Qira'ah or other relevant recognized Islamic qualification.
Candidates should be prepared to provide details of their Islamic education, training, certifications or relevant qualifications during the hiring process. Preferred Qualifications The ideal candidate will have several of the following:
- RECE or OCT designation.
- Montessori experience or certification.
- Experience teaching children ages 4–14.
- Experience in a weekend Islamic school or children's Islamic education program.
- Formal Islamic Studies education.
- Quran/Tajweed teaching experience or certification.
- Strong classroom-management skills.
- Experience developing age-appropriate activities and learning experiences.
- Warm, patient and encouraging teaching style.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with other educators.
What We Are Looking For We are looking for an educator who is both professionally competent and genuinely passionate about children's Islamic education .
The ideal teacher understands that teaching children is more than delivering information. They should be able to create a classroom where children feel respected, safe, encouraged to participate, and inspired to learn about Islam.
We particularly value educators who can combine professional early-childhood/teaching expertise with authentic Islamic knowledge and a warm, child-centred approach .
