If so, consider this physically demanding role with the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development where you will work in one of the most unique labs in Ontario.About the jobIn this position at the materials testing laboratory, you will:Prepare wire rope specimens and other materials for testing.Record the condition of wire ropes using an established rating system.Load universal testing machines and conduct routine maintenance of production and materials handling equipment as directed by supervisors.Mandatory requirementsParticipate in forklift, man lift and personal fall arrest equipment training.Be able to push, pull and lift supplies, grease-covered wire rope samples, and equipment weighing up to 35 kg.Be able to work in situations that require working from heights.Be able to stand for long periods of time preparing samples.Mechanical aptitudeAcquire the skills needed for taking measurements and samples of wire rope specimens.Make assessments, use measuring devices and understand data in an industrial shop setting.Clean samples and record ratings into a computer database.Use small handheld tools such as drills, electric saws, screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers and measuring devices such as a micrometer.Health and safety knowledgeHave proven health and safety knowledge working in an industrial setting and be able to work with chemicals.Know how to contain hazards in a shop setting and handle materials safely in the workplace.Understand the Occupational Health and Safety Act and work within its mandate.Technical knowledgePossess knowledge of mining terminology,



methods and hoisting equipment for the use of wire rope in underground mining.Know the design and construction of wire ropes to identify and record findings.Acquire and apply knowledge of the Canadian standards for wire rope hoisting and mine haulage.Possess knowledge of the strengths and properties of materials and scientific principles to select the best testing method and equipment for quality results.General skillsCommunicate orally and in writing to record data on test findings, prepare reports, and discuss testing procedures and standards.Work independently and as part of a team, managing time effectively.Use common office productivity software such as word processing, spreadsheets and email applications.Prepare reports, test findings, spreadsheets and update information in a computer system using data management.How we support diversity, inclusion and accessibilityWe are building an inclusive workforce that reflects the communities we serve.
