Acute Care Alberta (ACA) is seeking a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead the organization through its continued development as Alberta’s provincial acute care agency and support the ongoing transformation of the province’s acute care system. The CEO is responsible for the overall leadership, strategic direction, organizational performance, and continued evolution of Acute Care Alberta.

Acute Care Alberta is responsible for the leadership, oversight, coordination, planning, and performance management of acute care services across Alberta, including hospitals, urgent care centres, cancer care, organ transplantation, surgical services, and emergency medical services. Working in partnership with health service delivery organizations, government, clinicians, and system stakeholders, ACA supports a coordinated acute care system focused on access, quality, accountability, patient outcomes, and continuous improvement.

The CEO plays a critical role in translating government priorities and Ministry direction into organizational strategy, system expectations, funding oversight, commissioning, and performance management. The position requires a leader who can effectively balance strategic vision with operational execution while navigating a complex public-sector environment characterized by multiple stakeholders, evolving priorities, and significant accountability requirements. As the leader of ACA, the CEO is responsible for both the continued development of the organization and oversight of a significant portion of Alberta’s acute care system.

The role works closely with provincial health corporations, acute care providers, government officials, community partners, physicians, and clinical leaders to support improvements in service delivery, patient access, system performance, and care coordination across the province.

The CEO will lead ACA through a period of continued organizational and system transformation, strengthening accountability frameworks, clarifying roles and responsibilities across the acute care continuum, and supporting effective collaboration between government, ACA, and health service providers.



Success in the role will require strong political acumen, strategic leadership, organizational development capabilities, and the ability to build productive relationships across a highly visible and complex health care environment.

The position is also responsible for stewardship of significant public resources, including ACA’s operating budget and oversight of broader acute care system funding. The CEO must ensure that accountability, performance measurement, financial discipline, and evidence-based decision-making remain central to ACA’s mandate and operations.

The Candidate The successful candidate will be an accomplished senior executive with the leadership capability, credibility, and judgement required to lead within a complex health care and public-sector environment. They will bring experience leading large organizations or systems, driving organizational transformation, and working effectively through governance, accountability, and stakeholder relationships to achieve meaningful outcomes.

The Ideal Candidate Will Possess

- Significant executive leadership experience in a large or complex health care organization, with a preference for someone who has occupied a CEO position and has a proven track record in:
- Leadership across a multi-entity system;
- Holding arms-length providers or business units accountable;
- Using funding, contracting or performance mechanisms;
- Navigating government direction while preserving clear executive accountability;
- Leading through influence where direct reporting authority is limited.
- Demonstrated success developing and implementing organizational strategy and long-term transformational initiatives;
- Proven experience leading large-scale organizational or system change;
- Strong experience in performance management,



accountability frameworks, and organizational improvement;
- Exceptional relationship-building skills and the ability to work effectively with ministers, deputy ministers, government officials, boards, service providers, clinicians, and community stakeholders;
- Robust financial and operational management experience, including oversight of complex budgets and resource allocation decisions;
- A sound understanding of governance, public-sector accountability, and regulatory environments;
- Demonstrated political acumen and the ability to operate effectively in high-profile and evolving environments;
- Strong communication, stakeholder engagement, and public leadership capabilities;
- A proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop high-performing executive teams; and
- An unwavering commitment to ethical leadership, transparency, accountability, and public service.

Direct experience working within a health care administration is required along with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. A graduate degree in health administration, business administration, public administration or a related field is preferred. This is an English-speaking, full-time permanent position based anywhere in Alberta, Canada with travel throughout the province expected.

The salary range for the position is: $324,923 to $541,539.
