Acute Care Alberta (ACA) is seeking a Chief Operating Officer (COO) to provide executive operational leadership across the organization and support the continued development and performance of Alberta’s acute care system. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and serving as a member of the executive leadership team, the COO central role is in the oversight of health care service delivery organizations and works with Alberta Health Services, other provincial health corporations, contracted providers and system partners to support operational performance, capacity, quality and access. They will do this by leading and supporting efforts focused on provider accountability, performance management, commissioning, integration, and operational oversight of Alberta’s acute care system.

Acute Care Alberta is responsible for the leadership, oversight, coordination, planning, and performance management of acute care services across Alberta, including hospitals, urgent care centres, cancer care, organ transplantation, surgical services, and emergency medical services. Working in partnership with health service delivery organizations, government, clinicians, and system stakeholders, ACA supports a coordinated acute care system focused on access, quality, accountability, patient outcomes, and continuous improvement.

The COO plays a critical role in translating ACA’s mandate, government direction, and provincial health priorities into operational strategies, plans, and performance expectations. The position provides operational oversight of health care service delivery organizations within ACA’s mandate, including Alberta Health Services, Covenant Health, Lamont Health Care Centre, and chartered surgical facilities. Working closely with the CEO and executive leadership team,



the COO supports the effective delivery of acute care services across Alberta and contributes to the continued evolution of the province’s acute care model.

The COO provides strategic advice and recommendations on setting expectations for providers, monitoring performance, enforcing accountability, commissioning services, coordinating across providers, provincial programs, driving system integration, and intervention. The COO is accountable for operationalizing provider expectations, performance management, and integration.

Success in the role requires the ability to establish clear priorities, manage complexity, build productive relationships, and lead organizational change within a large and diverse health care environment.

The Candidate The successful candidate will be an experienced senior leader with a strong understanding of health care operations and the ability to work effectively within a complex provincial environment. They will bring significant experience leading large-scale operations, managing performance and resources, and working collaboratively across organizational and stakeholder boundaries.

The Ideal Candidate Will Possess

- Demonstrated executive leadership experience within a complex health care environment, with a preference for those who have had system level operational oversight;
- Significant experience in health care operations, service delivery or a comparable complex operational environment;
- Experience developing organizational and operational strategy;




- A proven ability to lead strategic initiatives and organizational change;
- Experience monitoring performance, enforcing accountability, and driving system integration;
- Robust decision-making abilities and sound professional judgement;
- The ability to influence, negotiate, and resolve complex issues involving multiple stakeholders;
- Exceptional communication, relationship management, and public-facing leadership skills;
- A demonstrated commitment to innovation, continuous improvement, and organizational excellence; and
- An unwavering commitment to ethical leadership, transparency, accountability, and public service.
- Direct experience working within a health care administration is required along with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. A graduate degree in health administration, business administration, public administration or a related field is preferred.

This is an English-speaking, full-time permanent position based anywhere in Alberta, Canada with travel throughout the province expected.

The salary range for the position is: $227,344 to $378,907.
