Working within the Department of Chemistry and Physics, this is a flexible position whose work schedule is variable and may include an irregular schedule of not less than three (3) hours per shift and up to thirty-five (35) hours per week. The position typically requires between 3 and 6 hours per week during fall and winter semesters.
The Student Learning Assistant is responsible for supporting and enhancing the student learning experience, and promoting a positive and productive learning environment. The role involves working closely with students, especially those in first and second-year chemistry and physics courses, to help them understand and engage with their course material,
Responsibilities
- Assist students in understanding course material and concepts, primarily in CHEM 1201, CHEM 1202, CHEM 2101, and PHYS 1201 and PHYS 1202.
- Provide tutoring in individual or group settings.
- Collaborate with faculty to identify students’ learning needs and challenges.
- Maintain confidentiality of student records and personal information.
- Participate in training.
- Review relevant topics as needed in advance of assigned hours.
- Informally communicate common conceptual misunderstandings to the relevant course coordinators.
- Keep a detailed record of the course or courses in which help was provided and the number of students assisted during each shift.
Qualifications
The ideal candidates will be third- or fourth-year students currently enrolled in MRU's B.Sc. Chemistry or B.Sc. General Science with a Physics Concentration, a Chemistry Minor or a Physics Minor. They will have completed at least one of the courses mentioned above with a grade of B or higher on each course. In addition to demonstrating robust academic performance in the subject area(s) to be tutored, they will also possess:
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
- An understanding of and appreciation for common barriers to success in first and second-year chemistry and physics courses.
Experience in tutoring or teaching will be considered an asset.
Salary: $15.45 - $18.00 per hour
