About the Role
We are looking for an experienced
Support Operator - Side Hoe to join our crews on various water, sewer, and underground construction projects. Reporting to the Foreman, the Support Operator plays an important role in supporting the mainline excavator and ground crew. The position involves operating different sizes of excavators, moving materials, supporting pipe installation, backfilling, and working safely around underground utilities and structures.
The successful candidate will be a reliable and safety-focused operator who can work effectively as part of a busy construction crew. Key Responsibilities
Operate various sizes of excavators, including 311, 135, 225, 245, and similar equipment Safely operate equipment around underground utilities and existing infrastructure Assist the mainline excavator operator by moving spoil piles away from trenches
Supply sand and rock for pipe bedding as required Lift and lower pipe into trenches to support the Pipelayer Operate a hoe pack in tight areas and around structures Backfill excavations as required Assist with excavation when required and when experience and skill level allow
Participate in morning toolbox talks and provide input on site activities and safety Complete daily equipment upkeep, including:
Greasing Fueling Cleaning Basic equipment inspections
Communicate effectively with ground crews and other equipment operators Follow company safety policies, procedures, and site requirements Perform other duties as assigned Requirements
Minimum
1 year of directly related equipment operating experience Experience operating excavators in construction environments Experience working around underground utilities Class 5 Driver's Licence with a clean driver's abstract CSTS 2020 WHMIS 2015 Ability to lift up to 60 lbs. unaided Solid safety awareness and attention to surroundings Ability to work effectively as part of a construction crew Reliable and willing to perform physical work when required Preferred Qualifications
Ground Disturbance Level 2 Dozer and track loader experience Experience working on water and sewer projects Experience operating a hoe pack in confined or tight areas Experience working around trenches, piping, and underground structures Working Conditions
Physically demanding work requiring standing, walking, kneeling, lifting, and other physical activity when outside the equipment A large portion of the workday will be spent seated while operating heavy equipment Outdoor work in all weather conditions Work in dusty and underground environments Work around active excavations, underground utilities, heavy equipment, and construction materials Ability to maintain a strong focus on safety and awareness of surroundings at all times
