The Town of Whitby is a community in transformation that is located in the heart of Durham Region in the eastern Greater Toronto Area. Reporting to, and under the direction of, the Supervisor of Waste Services the Working Foreperson, Environmental will be responsible for:
- the duties involved in the collection of curbside waste, organics, yard waste and special collections;
- regular front-line work including curbside collection duties as required;
- provide guidance and direction to front line staff, including training and performance monitoring;
- scheduling and planning work;
- inspection and monitoring of all applicable waste services requirements including safety compliance, customer service delivery as well as responding to vehicle and equipment issues;
- preparation and completion of all required reports and paperwork;
- inspects the quality of work and ensures all staff are operating safely as per established Standard Operating Procedures and Work Instructions;
- provides feedback to staff on job performance;
- supports Supervisor in resolving any staff performance issues; and
- other duties as may be assigned.
The incumbent will participate in the Working Foreperson After Hours On-Call rotation including winter snow and ice control operations.

You solve problems by identifying, gathering and processing relevant information to determine possible solutions, research options, evaluate them using your technical, numerical and analytics skills and make recommendations.
You are knowledgeable about and work in compliance with all workplace safety regulations, standards, and practices. You perform work in a safe manner and encourage and support others to do the same.
The Working Foreperson will actively monitor work activities and changing operational conditions; identify and respond to safety concerns, service disruptions, resource requirements and emerging issues; and promptly document, communicate and escalate significant, recurring or unresolved operational concerns, including observed job-performance issues, to the Supervisor of Waste for timely follow-up.
What You Bring To Our Team
As the successful applicant, you will possess:
- a minimum of two (2) year Post Secondary Diploma in Environmental Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology or related field.
- a minimum of three (3) years of directly related experience in solid waste collection.
- Current Certification in Standard First Aid & CPR ‘C’ and AED
- strong administrative skills to complete paperwork and computer work, and ensure quality standards;
- strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills to effectively resolve issues;
- the ability to effectively organize and prioritize projects and work assignments;
- possess a demonstrated working knowledge of computer programs, including a working knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word,
Excel, Outlook);
- be able to exercise discretion, judgement and diplomacy;
- the ability to schedule staff, distributing workload fairly and equitably;
- excellent time management skills;
- the ability to train new staff and monitor performance;
- the ability and willingness to respond outside of regular working hours on an “on-call” rotation; and,
- A valid Class “DZ” Driver’s Licence with ability to qualify for the Town’s safe driver program criteria with demonstrated experience operating vehicles over 11,000 kg., G.V.W.
- participation of after-hours “on-call” rotation

Current shift schedule: Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., forty (40) hours per week. Hours of work may be subject to change, shifts may be scheduled between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., Monday to Saturday.
