Carpenter/ Technician I – Fire Testing | Burnaby, BC | Full-Time | $50,000 to $65,000 per year

QAI Laboratories is looking for a hands-on Technician I – Fire Testing to join our Building Products team in Burnaby. If you enjoy working with construction materials, building test assemblies, operating laboratory equipment, and solving technical problems, this role provides an opportunity to develop your expertise in fire-resistance testing while contributing to the safety and performance of building products. You’ll work with a variety of test assemblies, applying recognized ASTM, UL, CSA, and building code requirements while collaborating with clients, engineers, project managers, and other QAI professionals.

What you will do:

- Build and assemble test samples such as walls, floors, doors, frames, and other construction assemblies in accordance with applicable standards and requirements.
- Perform laboratory and fire-resistance testing in accordance with applicable standards and requirements.
- Review drawings, specifications, standards, building codes, and client requirements to prepare test assemblies.
- Conduct tests, collect data, document results, and assist with test reports.
- Safely operate laboratory tools, equipment, and material-handling devices.
- Disassemble test assemblies and maintain a clean, safe, and organized laboratory.
- Maintain testing equipment, tools, and instruments.
- Manage multiple projects, deadlines, and changing priorities while maintaining quality and accuracy.
- Develop and apply knowledge of relevant testing standards and methods.
- Work with team members and clients to resolve technical issues and clarify requirements.
- Communicate effectively with staff, clients, and project stakeholders.
- Support projects and travel as required.
- Follow quality, safety, and company policies and procedures.




- Contribute to departmental goals and objectivesOther duties as assigned by the manager or its designee.

What you will need:

- Technical diploma, trade certification, or equivalent experience in construction/ carpentry, mechanical systems, or a related field
- Experience in construction/carpentry, fabrication, or testing environments
- Knowledge of construction / laboratory instrumentation / data acquisition / operating principles / calibration & general laboratory procedures;
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, technical specifications, and test standards
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and build accuracy
- Physically capable of lifting heavy materials and performing manual work in a lab/shop environment
- Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively within a technical team.
- Has a basic understanding of quality procedures and HR policies.
- Understanding of workplace safety practices and experience working in regulated environments.
- Familiar with MS Office and other software relevant to the position.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel as required.

Key Technical Competence:

- Accepts instruction and follows it for testing outside of their general scope of knowledge and experience.
- Able to grasp general concepts in a field of testing and apply it to specific test methods.




- Able to perform testing and as knowledge grows in a specific field of testing graduates to more complex testing methods.
- Seeks assistance and knowledge from more senior personnel when a specific requirement is outside of their general scope of knowledge.
- Good working knowledge of the test methods in their specific discipline.
- Able to multi-task with some degree of efficiency and accuracy.
- Maintains a sense of ownership and responsibility for projects assigned to them.

Additional Assets:

- Previous experience working with construction materials and building products.
- Knowledge of building code compliance practices in Canada and/or the United States.
- Familiarity with ASTM, UL, and CSA test methods related to building products.
- Previous experience in testing, inspection, certification, or a regulated laboratory environment.
