About the Opportunity An exciting opportunity is available for a Civil Project Engineer to join the Capital Projects team supporting one of Canada’s largest gold mining operations. This is an independent contractor opportunity , with a target start date of approximately mid-October 2026 .
Reporting directly to the Lead Civil Project Engineer, this is an intermediate-to-senior individual contributor position responsible for the day-to-day coordination and ownership of assigned civil engineering packages within major mining and processing projects.
The Civil Project Engineer will work closely with engineering consultants and multidisciplinary project stakeholders to coordinate design development, review engineering deliverables, assess constructability, prepare scopes of work, and support assigned civil packages through project execution.
The successful candidate will act as the package owner for assigned civil engineering packages , while the Lead Civil Project Engineer maintains overall oversight of civil packages across the broader project team. The Civil Project Engineer will work closely with the Lead on key engineering decisions and escalate significant technical or execution roadblocks as required.
This is an individual contributor position with no direct reports or people-management responsibilities .
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the package owner for assigned civil engineering packages , coordinating engineering activities, deliverables, interfaces, and stakeholders throughout project execution.
- Manage the day-to-day coordination of external engineering consultants responsible for assigned civil packages.
- Coordinate design development and ensure engineering consultants deliver documentation in accordance with project requirements, scope, schedule, and applicable standards.
- Review consultant-produced engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, technical reports, scopes of work, and other engineering deliverables .
- Review civil designs from a constructability perspective , identifying potential execution challenges and ensuring proposed designs can be practically and safely constructed in the field.
- Lead and participate in design reviews and constructability reviews , coordinating comments and required revisions with engineering consultants and project stakeholders.
- Prepare and develop Scopes of Work (SOWs) for engineering consultants and contractors associated with assigned civil packages.
- Coordinate with multiple internal and external stakeholders, including engineering, construction, operations, maintenance,
procurement, environmental, project controls, consultants, and contractors.
- Coordinate engineering interfaces between civil packages and other disciplines, including structural, mechanical, electrical, process, and infrastructure.
- Monitor engineering consultant progress and assigned package deliverables against established project schedules and requirements.
- Support procurement activities associated with assigned packages, including technical scope development, clarification of technical requirements, and technical bid evaluations.
- Participate in value engineering, project risk assessments, and technical reviews to identify opportunities, constraints, and potential project risks.
- Support construction activities by responding to technical queries, coordinating engineering clarifications, and assisting with the resolution of field engineering and constructability issues.
- Coordinate consultant and contractor interfaces during project execution to ensure engineering requirements are effectively communicated and implemented.
- Support assigned packages through construction, commissioning, turnover, documentation, and closeout as required.
- Work closely with Project Controls and other project team members to monitor scope, schedule, cost, progress, risks, changes, and key deliverables associated with assigned packages.
- Ensure assigned engineering work complies with applicable regulations, project standards, engineering best practices, and site health and safety requirements.
- Maintain regular communication with the Lead Civil Project Engineer regarding package status, technical decisions, risks, and execution challenges.
- Escalate significant technical issues, design concerns, constructability challenges, or project roadblocks to the Lead Civil Project Engineer and work collaboratively toward resolution.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering .
- Approximately 8–9+ years of relevant engineering and project experience , ideally at an intermediate-to-senior Project Engineer level.
- Previous mining industry experience is required , including experience supporting civil engineering projects for operating mines, mine expansions, mineral processing facilities, or other mining infrastructure.
- Valid Professional Engineer (P.Eng.)
designation in Canada . Registration may be held in Ontario or another Canadian province.
- Strong experience coordinating and working with engineering consultants on multidisciplinary capital projects.
- Demonstrated experience reviewing consultant-produced civil/structural engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, scopes of work, and technical documentation.
- Strong understanding of constructability and demonstrated ability to review engineering designs from a practical construction and execution perspective.
- Experience preparing and developing Scopes of Work (SOWs) for engineering and/or construction packages.
- Experience coordinating civil engineering packages through multiple stages of project execution, including engineering, procurement, construction support, commissioning, and closeout.
- Strong understanding of civil infrastructure associated with mining and/or mineral processing operations.
- Experience coordinating with multidisciplinary project stakeholders, including engineering, construction, operations, procurement, project controls, consultants, and contractors.
- Working knowledge of project scope, schedule, cost, risk, change management, and engineering deliverable management.
- Strong technical judgment, communication, coordination, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to independently manage assigned engineering packages while working within the overall direction and governance established by the Lead Civil Project Engineer.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary Capital Projects environment.
Preferred Experience
- Gold mining experience.
- Mining process plant construction, expansion, or sustaining capital projects.
- Brownfield projects within operating mine or mineral processing environments.
- Mine infrastructure and site civil works.
- Experience working with EPC/EPCM organizations and engineering consultants.
- Experience working at operating or remote mine sites.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Navisworks , and other relevant engineering/design review software
Hybrid Rotation: Phase 1 (2026 and 2027) – Sudbury Office and work from home (3-week rotation)
(Weeks 1 & 2)
-Work in downtown Sudbury: Monday to Thursday (Approximately 10–11 hours per day)
-Friday to Sunday: Days off.
(Week 3):
- Work from home: Monday to Friday. Approximately 10–11 hours per day. Phase 2 (currently anticipated to be in 2028) – Mine site and work from home
(Week 1 and Week 3)
- Work at the mine site: Monday to Thursday. Approximately 10-11 hours per day (Week 2 and Week 4)
-Work from home: Monday to Thursday and potentially Friday (2 hours).
