Kumpfy Shoes u0026 Repair

Canmore

Kumpfy Shoes & Repair is looking for an experienced Cobbler / Climbing Shoe Resole Specialist to join our repair team in Canmore, Alberta, in the heart of the Canadian Rockies.

We are an established independent shoe and clothing store and full-service repair shop specializing in keeping footwear, clothing and outdoor gear in use and out of the landfill. Climbing shoe repair is an important and growing part of our business, and we're looking for someone who has the skills or a strong professional cobbling background to join our team.

The Position

Your primary focus will be rock climbing shoe resoling and repair, including:

- Removing and replacing worn climbing shoe soles
- Rand repair and replacement
- Preparing, grinding and cleaning surfaces for bonding
- Cutting, fitting and bonding climbing-specific rubber
- Working with both traditional and downturned climbing shoes
- Using lasts to maintain shoe shape and tension during repair
- Working with professional footwear adhesives and heat activation
- Finishing, grinding and detailing completed repairs
- Assessing climbing shoes and determining the appropriate repair
- Maintaining consistent, high-quality workmanship
- Assisting with other footwear repairs as required

Experience & Skills We are ideally looking for someone with 3–5+ years of professional cobbling, shoemaking or footwear repair experience.

Previous climbing shoe resoling experience is strongly preferred. However, we will also consider an accomplished cobbler or shoemaker with excellent hand skills,

a strong understanding of footwear construction and an interest in specializing in climbing footwear.

You should be comfortable working with:

- Shoe repair finishing machines
- Sanders and grinders
- Shoe lasts
- Presses
- Heat activation equipment
- Knives, skiving and cutting tools
- Professional footwear adhesives
- Rubber, leather and synthetic footwear materials
- Hand tools used in traditional and modern shoe repair

Experience with climbing-specific rubber compounds, rand replacement, downturned climbing shoes and technical climbing footwear construction would be a significant asset. Formal training or an apprenticeship in cobbling, shoemaking, footwear repair or leatherwork is an asset, but demonstrated skill and experience are more key to us than certificates.

Who We're Looking For

You take pride in doing things properly. You're patient, mechanically minded and have excellent attention to detail. You understand that repairing technical footwear is as much about craftsmanship and problem-solving as it is about following a set procedure.

We're particularly interested in someone who wants to develop climbing shoe resoling into their specialty and become an important part of our repair operation.

Why Kumpfy?

Kumpfy Shoes & Repair started by resoling climbing shoes in a shed nearly 20 years ago. Since opening our Canmore shop in 2016, we've grown into a full-service footwear, outdoor gear and clothing repair/retail business. Repair is a major part of what we do.

You'll be working in Canmore, Alberta, surrounded by some of Canada's best climbing, hiking, skiing and mountain biking, with Banff National Park just down the road.

If you love climbing and the outdoors, it's a pretty spectacular place to call home.

International Applicants Welcome

We welcome applications from qualified candidates within Canada and internationally.

International candidates who may be eligible to work in Canada through programs such as Francophone Mobility, International Experience Canada (IEC), or other Canadian work-permit pathways are encouraged to apply.

French-speaking candidates interested in relocating to Alberta are particularly encouraged to contact us.

How to Apply

Please send us your résumé and a short introduction describing your footwear repair, cobbling or shoemaking experience.
