About the Role
As an integral part of Verdyn's dynamic team, you'll develop the real-time embedded firmware and FPGA logic that runs our DC Microgrids and EV DC Fast Charger systems. This is a hands-on role for an engineer who has shipped production systems built on FPGA/RTL control, deterministic industrial communication (EtherCAT or similar), and CAN — designing, developing, optimizing, and validating the low-level software and gateware that make high-power systems fast, safe, and reliable.
Responsibilities
Core Firmware & FPGA Development
- Design, develop, and refine firmware and FPGA gateware for microcontrollers, power-electronics controllers, and communication interfaces, enhancing system operational efficiency and reliability.
- Develop FPGA/RTL logic (VHDL or Verilog) for high-speed control, PWM and gate-drive generation, ADC interfacing, and hardware protection/interlock logic — including simulation, testbenches, and timing closure.
- Implement real-time control algorithms, power-management protocols, and safety systems across MCU and FPGA targets, partitioning functionality appropriately between software and gateware.
- Develop and optimize low-level drivers and stacks for EtherCAT (or a similar real-time industrial bus such as PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, or POWERLINK), CAN / CAN-FD (CANopen,
J1939), ADCs, PWM controllers, Modbus, and Ethernet.
Integration, Test & Validation
- Conduct comprehensive testing and validation of firmware and gateware, including unit testing, integration testing, and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing.
- Bring up recent hardware alongside the hardware team — debugging with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and bus/protocol analyzers — and drive issues to root cause.
- Collaborate seamlessly with hardware engineers, system architects, and project stakeholders to ensure efficient progress and robust communication.
- Standards & Documentation
- Uphold stringent compliance with specifications, safety standards (IEC 61508, ISO 26262), and customer requirements through expert firmware development, debugging, and validation activities.
- Foster an efficient documentation process including technical specifications, code and RTL documentation, and test procedures that align with our high industry and company standards.
- Proactively explore and integrate emerging technologies in embedded systems and reconfigurable logic to stay abreast of the rapidly evolving development landscape.
Qualifications
Required
- A Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Embedded Systems Engineering, or a similar technical field.
- Professional (in-industry) experience designing and shipping embedded firmware for power electronics, renewable energy systems, or automotive applications — not academic exposure alone.
- Hands-on production experience with FPGA/RTL development in VHDL or Verilog (e.g.,
AMD/Xilinx, Intel/Altera, Lattice, or Microchip), including simulation and timing closure.
- Professional experience with a real-time industrial communication bus — EtherCAT strongly preferred, or a comparable protocol (PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, SERCOS, POWERLINK).
- Demonstrated professional experience with CAN / CAN-FD (CANopen or J1939), including driver-level and application-level work.
- Proficient in embedded programming languages including C/C++, assembly, and real-time operating systems.
- Experience with microcontroller platforms and low-level hardware bring-up.
- Strong understanding of hardware-software integration, signal processing, and the ability to work closely with hardware design teams.
- A strong ethic for self-management, exhibiting the ability to work independently while diligently adhering to project timelines and safety requirements.
Preferred
- Knowledge of power electronics control, motor control, battery management systems, and grid-tie inverter technologies.
- Experience implementing an EtherCAT slave (ESC) or master, distributed-clock synchronization, or FPGA-based fieldbus interfaces.
- Experience with SoC FPGAs (e.g., Zynq) that combine a processor and programmable logic.
- Familiarity with safety-critical system development under IEC 61508 or ISO 26262.
- Experience with version control systems, continuous integration, and agile development methodologies.
