Job Title: Environment Advisor
Location: Montreal, QC (H3B 4G1)
Duration: 12 months contract
Work Mode: Onsite, 3 Days in office
Purpose:
- Reporting to the Senior Advisor, Environment, the Advisor, Environment will act as a subject matter expert bringing environmental expertise to VIA Rail participating in the day-to-day management of environmental risks. He/She will be contributing to the monitoring and continuous improvement of environmental practices working on specific mandates related to the:
- Identification and evaluation of environmental risks
- Development and implementation of operational controls, environmental programs and related training material
- Monitor compliance and performance through data analyses, inspections and audits
- Support in the reporting/investigation of incidents and implementation of corrective measures
:
- Risk Management
- Identify and evaluate the environmental hazards, perform risks analysis and propose plans to eliminate/mitigate the impacts that may cause environmental issues.
- Provides on-going support to operational activities, in collaboration with the senior management, frontline management, and the unionized workforce for all matters related to the environment.
- Operational Controls and Programs
- Identify and monitor environmental requirements applicable to VIA Rail’s activities.
- Develop, maintain and continuously improve the operational controls, procedures and environmental programs to control the risks especially those pertaining to the management of storage and distribution of petroleum products, air emissions, wastewater, potable water, halocarbons, waste management and residual hazardous materials management.
- Maintain records, databases, and tracking tools related to regulatory compliance, permits, training, and inspections (e.g., NPRI, halocarbons).
- Supports the development of environmental training and awareness activities,
and the Environmental Communication Plan for the organization.
- Incident Management
- Ensure implementation of the Incident Management Process to ensure compliance, quality and effectiveness in resolving Environmental issues.
- Conduct and provide assistance and guidance to management and the unionized workforce in the conduct of incident/accident investigations including reporting and documentation.
- Provide support and coaching to Business Units utilizing root cause problem solving to prevent Environmental issues.
- Recommend and coordinates the implementation of preventive and corrective measures based on best practices.
- Participate in response activities during environmental incidents, including the implementation of emergency measures (e.g., spills), event documentation, and follow-up steps.
- Monitoring
- Plan, coordinate and conduct environmental inspections and on-the-job observations of the activities and tasks to monitor implementation of operational controls and programs.
- Evaluate compliance of the facilities and equipment to federal, provincial and municipal regulations.
- Support the preparation and conduct of audits and management reviews to maintain the ISO 14001 certification.
- Report results along with conclusions and recommendations. Evaluate the priority of the actions based on risk. Support implementation of corrective actions.
Qualifications:
- Hold a university degree in Environment, Risk Management or related field.
- Minimum of 5 years experience in environmental risk management or in a similar role within a company of comparable size and scope, dealing with unionized workforce.
- Strong understanding of environmental management concepts, methodologies, and frameworks (e.g., ISO 14001).
- Knowledge of regulations applicable to environmental risk management.
- Robust knowledge on environmental management system.
- Experience in audits
- Excellent written and verbal proficiency in both official languages (English/French)
