Equipment Operator (Snow)

Reports to: Operations Manager and/or Crew Lead

Summary:

The Equipment Operator (Snow) participates in a team setting to safely and effectively clear snow and manage snow/ice risk using heavier snow-removal equipment.

Equipment

Operators are expected to be available 24 hours/day, 7 days/week whenever a snow or ice event occurs on assigned sites. Operators may be assigned skid steers, compact or small loaders, large wheel loaders, tractors or other approved equipment equipped with plows, pushers, buckets, blowers or related attachments. Excellent care of equipment is required. Site awareness and recordkeeping are essential.

Responsibilities:

- Respond promptly to calls for snow and ice events
- Report fit for duty and free from the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medicines that may affect safe and productive equipment operation
- Conduct pre-shift and post-shift inspections and required maintenance on assigned equipment and attachments
- Safely operate skid steers, compact/small loaders, large wheel loaders, tractors and other approved snow-removal equipment
- Operate plows, pushers, buckets, blowers and other attachments in accordance with training and manufacturer recommendations




- Clear snow from designated areas shown on site maps and follow site-specific sequencing and service instructions
- Pile, stack or relocate snow only in designated and approved locations
- Maintain safe clearance from buildings, curbs, islands, vehicles, pedestrians, overhead hazards, utilities and other equipment
- Control ice accumulations with approved de-icing materials when assigned and when the equipment is appropriately equipped
- Assist with snow loading, relocation and stacking operations as directed
- Hand-shovel or hand-treat areas as required when safe and practical
- Remain available for communication throughout the shift and before/after shifts
- Maintain accurate records of times, dates, equipment inspections, service activities, site conditions, material use and weather
- Submit required paperwork and digital documentation promptly at the end of each shift
- Document and report obstacles, property damage, incidents, hazards, mechanical concerns and equipment defects immediately
- Perform basic maintenance and small repairs within training and authorization
- Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment
- Comply with all company policies and procedures
- Work in accordance with all applicable health and safety laws and regulations

Minimum Qualifications:

- Valid ‘G’ driver’s license and/or applicable equipment operator training/certification
- Safe driving record and ability to submit a driver’s abstract upon request where driving is required




- Minimum 2 years of relevant snow-removal equipment operating experience is preferred
- Demonstrated competence on one or more of: skid steer, compact/small loader, large wheel loader or tractor
- Ability to read and interpret maps and site plans
- Knowledge of pre-use inspections, maintenance/repair reporting and service documentation
- Physically fit with strong stamina
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written
- Ability to work independently with little supervision and as part of a team

Work Conditions:

- Various commercial, institutional and residential sites
- On-call hours including nights, weekends and holidays
- Extended periods seated in vibrating equipment and repetitive equipment operation
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. as required
- Fast-paced work in active winter operations
- Regular work near heavy equipment, vehicles, pedestrians and structures
- Outdoor exposure to extreme cold, snow, freezing rain, wind, dust, noise, darkness and wet conditions

Pay: $28.50-$32.50 per hour
