Title: Head Custodian at Shawnee Heights Middle School
Schedule: 8 hours per day / Year Round Employment
Reports to: Building Principal and Custodial Coordinator
Supervises: Custodial staff of the assigned facility
Purpose and Objectives of the Position: The Head Custodian is an important member of the school staff as he/she must continually strive to maintain and improve the physical environment in which learning takes place. This effort requires not only his/her assistance as directed by the Custodial Coordinator and Principal, but also the ability to “see” needs and correct them without specific direction.
Essential Job Functions:
- Ability to perform all tasks the regular custodian performs.
- Ability to provide a protected, attractive, comfortable, and clean environment to ensure full and productive use of district facilities.
- Ability to coordinate and supervise the activities of the custodial staff.
- Ability to promote a caring, helping attitude toward staff, students, and patrons, and convey that attitude in all that he/she does.
- Ability to supervise, motivate, and direct custodial employees to develop to their fullest potential.
- Ability to ensure all activities conform to district guidelines.
- Ability to communicate and work effectively and cooperatively with members of the school district and community.
- Ability to safely operate all equipment and machinery as required.
- Ability to work to implement the vision and mission of the district.
Building Maintenance:
- Building maintenance is a daily responsibility. The following maintenance needs should be identified as the Head Custodian performs his/her regular duties and either corrected or reported to the Principal or Buildings and Grounds Coordinator:
- Replacement of light bulbs and ballasts – light switches – electrical plugs.
- Replacement of damaged ceiling and floor tiles.
- Minor locker repair.
- Repair urinal / toilet flush valves.
- Snow and ice removal on sidewalks, including walking roof for damage.
Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:
- Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials,
maximum of 75 pounds.
- Requires stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning, reaching, climbing, balancing and walking long distances.
- Must work indoors and outdoors year-round.
- Must occasionally work in noisy and crowded environment, with numerous interruptions.
- Must work in and around dust, fumes, and odors.
General Responsibilities:
- Ability to open, close, and secure buildings each school day. (Doors may need to remain locked from the outside in certain areas.)
- Ability to raise the United States flag, and Kansas flag, before school commences and lower the same after school closing.
- Ability to check daily and ensure all exit doors will open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
- Ability to immediately report unauthorized persons on the school premises to the Principal.
- Ability to immediately report damaged to school property to the Principal and/or Building and Grounds Coordinator.
- Ability to keep building and premises (including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas) neat, clean and safe at all times.
- Ability to clean corridors and drinking fountains daily.
- Check restrooms after recess, lunch, and assemblies and clean as needed.
- Ability to receive, deliver, and store all school supplies.
- Ability to set up for assemblies, prepare the cafeteria for lunch, and move staff equipment.
- Ability to assist in the cafeteria during lunch as instructed by the Principal.
- Ability to exercise appropriate judgment and initiative to handle emergency situations as they arise. Such things as spills, sick students, stopped-up stools, and broken glass must be handled immediately and expeditiously, along with regular duties.
- Ability to maintain a clean building.
Areas not used for instruction during the day are the Head Custodian’s major responsibility to keep clean.
- The Head Custodian is the custodial team leader and must instruct his/her employee(s) as to duties and techniques, communicate with them daily, constructively critique their work, and evaluate their performance.
- Ability to implement the wishes of the school administration to facilitate the smooth operations of the school program.
- Ability to maintain grounds to conform to district standards.
- Ability to respond to information requests in a cooperative, courteous, and timely manner.
- Ability to perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Principal, Custodial Coordinator, or other administrative staff.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to understand chemical hazards.
- Must have previous experience as a school custodian or custodial service in other institutions or firms.
- Ability to work independently without supervision.
- Experience and knowledge in the areas of electrical, maintenance, and carpentry.
- Ability to manually lift a maximum of 75 pounds.
- Ability to observe and follow all school district policies at all times.
- Ability to react to change and frequent interruptions in a productive and positive manner, meeting deadlines as assigned.
- Ability to implement and follow all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Blood borne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
- Must verify good health by passing a physical examination, which includes TB and drug test as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Desire to continue career improvement by enhancing skills and job performance.
- Ability to keep student and personnel information and records confidential.
