Villa Caritas is a 150 bed acute secure geriatric psychiatry hospital. The hospital has 5 units each composed of 30 beds. Our facility provides comprehensive interdisciplinary assessment, individualized care and treatment with the goal of achieving maximum rehabilitation, optimal function and overall wellness to older adults with complex cognitive and psychiatric challenges.

Patients admitted to our facility have been identified as having acute psychiatric symptoms and/or behavioral difficulties which significantly compromise their safety, physical and/or mental well-being. Our team delivers services through an interdisciplinary model in collaboration with medical personnel, community resources and family members in an effort to achieve the stabilization and successful discharge of our patients to an appropriate care setting.

Description

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) works as a member of the multidisciplinary health care team, collaborating in the delivery of holistic care and support to patients/residents and families. The LPN practices to full scope, applying professional nursing knowledge, clinical judgment, critical thinking, and communication skills to support safe care and positive health outcomes. The role is committed to providing person-centred, culturally safe, and inclusive care that respects the diverse backgrounds, experiences, values, and needs of patients/residents and families.

The LPN contributes to a culture of learning and professional practice excellence by orienting, coaching, mentoring, and supporting the development of staff, students, and learners. The role promotes knowledge sharing and collaborative practice to enhance individual,



team, and organizational effectiveness. The LPN fosters an inclusive learning environment that encourages respectful engagement and equitable opportunities for growth and development.

The LPN demonstrates leadership within their scope of practice by coordinating care activities, supporting effective team functioning, and contributing to quality improvement and patient/resident safety initiatives. The incumbent fosters professional relationships with patients/residents, families, colleagues, physicians, and other members of the health care team, promoting a culture of respect, collaboration, and belonging. The LPN practices in accordance with applicable legislation, regulatory standards, professional ethics, and the Mission, Vision, Values, policies, and procedures of Covenant Health.

Required Qualifications Required Qualifications: Graduate of a Practical Nursing program or recognized equivalent required. Active registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides of Alberta (CLHA).

Basic Life Support Healthcare

Provider (Level C) required.

Additional Required Qualifications

Experience in mental health (Geriatric Psychiatry) or related settings required. Ability to provide leadership and function as a team member. Ability to work independently. Ability to work in a fast paced and, at times, highly stressful environment.

Must be able to speak, read, and write English fluently. Strong assessment skills to recognize and respond appropriately to changes in patients' behavior. Ability to recognize, assess and act upon patients in acute mental health crisis, such as delirium.

Strong communication skills and ability to adapt communication style to meet patient needs. Positive organizational and conflict resolution skills. Excellent time management skills. Proven dependability. Ability to be objective in decision making.

Preferred Qualifications

Recent patient care experience in geriatric psychiatry or with dementia patients/residents in acute or continuing care.

Current

Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NCI) training preferred. Current beLITE training preferred. I.V.

certification and current Alaris pump training preferred.

Experience with Connect Care preferred.
