Position Summary

The Medical Laboratory Sciences Laboratory Technologist ( MLS Technologist) supports student learning and skill development within the Medical Laboratory Assistant ( MLA ) and Medical Laboratory Technologist ( MLT ) programs by assisting students in achieving established learning outcomes identified in program course outlines. The MLS Technologist assists and guides student performance in laboratory and simulation settings through the delivery of laboratory activities, demonstrations, equipment preparation, and technical support. Responsibilities include ordering, organizing, maintaining, and troubleshooting laboratory equipment, supplies, specimens, and learning resources, as well as maintaining accurate inventory records.

As part of this role, the MLS Technologist is responsible for supporting laboratory quality, safety, biosafety, and biosecurity practices in accordance with Public Health Agency of Canada ( PHAC ) requirements, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System ( WHMIS ) standards, applicable provincial legislation, and accreditation requirements established by Accreditation Canada EQual and the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science ( CSMLS ). This includes maintaining laboratory equipment, quality control records, safety documentation, standard operating procedures, and other resources necessary to support a protected and effective learning environment.

Working under the direction of the Academic Manager and faculty members assigned to the labs, the MLS Technologist provides students with opportunities to develop and refine technical competencies in specimen collection, specimen processing, laboratory operations, quality assurance,



and diagnostic testing procedures. The incumbent collaborates with management, faculty, support staff, vendors, and contractors to support laboratory operations, maintenance, and safety. The MLS Technologist is responsible for the operation, organization, and maintenance of assigned Medical Laboratory Sciences teaching laboratories, preparation rooms, and storage areas.

Minimum level of formal education required for the position 3 year diploma/degree plus professional certification or equivalent education

Additional Requirements

- Current CPR /First Aid certification.
- WHMIS training and annual updates.
- Transportation of Dangerous Goods ( TDG ) training, where applicable.
- Public Health Agency of Canada ( PHAC ) laboratory biosafety training.
- Health and Safety awareness training.
- Laboratory Information System ( LIS ) experience (e.g., Meditech, Wellsky, or equivalent laboratory information systems).
- Quality Management Systems ( QMS ) and laboratory quality assurance training.
- Training related to specimen handling, biosafety, infection prevention and control, and laboratory risk management.

Field(s) of Study

Graduate of a recognized Medical Laboratory Technology program with current certification through the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science ( CSMLS ) as a Medical Laboratory Technologist ( MLT ).

Consideration may be given to candidates with a combination of a Medical Laboratory Technology diploma/degree and demonstrated expertise in medical laboratory practice relevant to the instructional requirements of the program.

Type of Experience

Recent practical experience with the knowledge, skills, and professional judgment required in contemporary medical laboratory practice. Demonstrated understanding of laboratory procedures, quality assurance processes, laboratory safety standards,



specimen management, and diagnostic testing principles.

Recent experience as a Medical Laboratory Technologist in a clinical laboratory setting requiring current knowledge and proficiency in one or more disciplines including:

- Clinical Chemistry
- Hematology
- Microbiology
- Transfusion Science
- Histotechnology
- Specimen Collection and Processing

Experience working with laboratory instrumentation, analyzers, microscopes, centrifuges, incubators, quality control systems, and laboratory information systems.

Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory quality management systems, accreditation requirements, biosafety practices, infection prevention and control principles, and regulatory standards applicable to medical laboratory environments.

Experience performing equipment maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and quality control processes in accordance with established laboratory procedures.

Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and computer skills, with the ability to support student learning and technical skill development in a post-secondary laboratory environment.

Preferred experience in a teaching, simulation, clinical education, or laboratory training environment, including experience supporting laboratory demonstrations, competency assessment, remediation activities, and student skill development.

Hands-on experience working with a variety of laboratory technologies, information systems, and educational technologies used in medical laboratory training programs.
