PROGRAM: Concussion/ECAT - Rehabilitation Services
REPORTS TO: Rehab Services Manager
LOCATION: Coquitlam
STATUS: Part Time Permanent
HOURS OF WORK: 15 hours/week - Monday, Wednesday, or Friday – 2 full days or 3 afternoons
HOURLY RATE: $44-$54 depending on experience and internal equity
Under the direction of the Rehab Services Manager, the Physical Therapist (PT) is responsible for working within a multidisciplinary team. The successful candidate will work with an Occupational Therapist, Kinesiologist, and Registered Clinical Counsellor to provide vestibular, balance, musculoskeletal rehabilitation and return to work support for clients with recent concussions.
The Early Concussion Assessment and Treatment (ECAT) Program focuses on treatment of clients with recent concussions. Additional hours of work may be available for candidates wanting to work in other treatment programs or service models.
STANDARDS OF PRACTICE
All Back in Motion Physiotherapists will comply with the ethical and professional standards as outlined by the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia and will comply with specific standards relevant to their practice in the programs, as outlined below.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Day-to-day administrative duties involved in the operation of the programs;
- Responsible for any other duties that may be involved in the operational or clinical aspects of the programs;
- Responsible for relevant data collection on client intake and discharge;
- Participates in company committees (i.e. Health and Safety);
- Participates in special projects as they arise;
- Participates in clinician meetings and special projects as necessary;
- Maintains knowledge through participation in professional development and research activities as outlined in performance reviews;
- May be required to assist at other clinics to manage referral fluctuations or vacation coverage.
Activity Program
- Develops, progresses and monitors individualized injury-specific and general exercise programs as part of the active physical therapy program. General area of focus includes vestibular, balance, strength/conditioning, pain/symptom management, and musculoskeletal interventions.
Assessment/Treatment
- Reviews medical file(s);
- Conducts an interview to obtain information regarding the client’s current physical status and past medical history as well as screen for protected participation in an active rehabilitation program;
- A physical assessment, including Vestibular and neurological assessment, is performed to determine the client’s current level of functioning as well as to ascertain any physical barriers that need to be addressed in order to ensure a safe and timely return to work. This is done both at the start of the program, as well as throughout the program in order for physical progress to be monitored;
- Develops individualized treatment plans, including injury-specific and general exercise programs will be designed, monitored and progressed for the clients;
- Maintains clinical charts/files and write timely formal reports;
- Provides clients with education and if relevant, treatment, aimed at pain/symptom management strategies;
- Liaises with Family Physicians,
community therapists, referral sources, and other stakeholders as necessary;
Case Coordination
Within the appropriate programs, may communicate with Case managers, employers, Physicians, Occupational Therapists, and/or Kinesiologists in order to keep all team members informed of the client’s physical and functional status, return to work status, and progress during both the active rehabilitation program and possibly the graduated return to work plan.
Graduated Return to Work
- Provides input regarding physical status and gradual return to work which may include recommended length/hours and appropriate progression of physical duties;
- May provide telephone or in-person support during a graduated return to work plans.
Education
- Provides individualized education on concussion recovery, pacing, pain/symptom management, sleep hygiene, brain injury, balance and dizziness, headache management, soft tissue healing, physical therapy treatment and management and anatomy;
Reports
- Intake, Progress, and Discharge Reports;
QUALIFICATIONS
- 12 months of experience as a Physiotherapist, related to the treatment of concussion and vestibular disorders within the last three years
- Course work in concussion management
- Interest in vocational rehabilitation and concussion
- Previous experience working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, preferably in the field of vocational rehabilitation is an asset
- Understanding of the bio-psychosocial approach, vestibular rehabilitation, and neurological assessment and intervention.
- Minimum Bachelors or Masters degree in Physical Therapy or equivalent.
- Registered with the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia
