Position Summary

The Audio Visual (AV) Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation and commissioning, operation, and lifecycle management of audiovisual and collaboration technologies across classrooms, common spaces, labs, boardrooms, auditoriums, and specialized teaching and learning environments across all campuses and satellite locations.

Reporting to the Manager of ITS Service Delivery, this role extends beyond the traditional responsibilities of an AV Engineer. It ensures alignment with the institutional technology strategy and serves as a trusted advisor, providing expert guidance on AV design and future expansion to support long-term planning, AV standards, and roadmap development.

Key Responsibilities

- Serve as the technical authority for the design and engineering of audiovisual systems across classrooms, common spaces, auditoriums, labs, meeting/boardrooms, and event spaces, conducting needs assessments and site evaluations for learning environments.
- Develop and maintain institutional AV standards covering control systems, audio reinforcement, displays, projection, lecture capture, and AV-over-IP architectures, while leading system architecture decisions for signal flow, networked AV, control platforms, and room typologies.
- Produce and review detailed system drawings, schematics, bills of materials (BOMs),



and technical documentation.
- Lead AV projects from planning through installation, commissioning, and handover, including producing and reviewing RFQs, RFPs, BOMs, and technical documentation.
- Coordinate vendors, contractors, internal stakeholders, and attend project meetings with vendors and ITS Managers.
- Oversee system integration, testing, and acceptance while maintaining accurate as-built documentation and system inventories.
- Provide Tier 3 escalation support for complex AV system issues.
- Other duties as assigned.

Educational and Experience Requirements

- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, IT, or a related field from a recognized post-secondary institution.
- Minimum eight (8) years of hands-on experience designing, implementing, supporting, and optimizing enterprise-grade AV systems in a large-scale IT environment, preferably within higher education.
- Advanced experience with AV system design, commissioning, standards development, documentation, lifecycle planning, and multi-campus room technologies, including classrooms, lecture halls, auditoriums, HyFlex spaces, boardrooms, and event spaces.
- Strong technical knowledge of AV-over-IP, digital media transport, DSP/audio systems, projection and display technologies, wireless presentation, control systems, unified communications, and secure AV networking.
- Experience with AV networking and security concepts such as VLANs, multicast, QoS, Dante, AES67, AVB, authentication, access control, encrypted AV streams, and campus-wide distribution.
- Experience with cloud and hybrid AV management platforms such as Microsoft Teams Rooms, Zoom Rooms, Crestron XiO Cloud, Extron GlobalViewer, or equivalent tools.
- Ability to automate, monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize AV systems using scripting, programming, telemetry, analytics, and AV control platforms.
- Proven ability to lead technical design discussions, support architecture reviews, coordinate vendors and stakeholders, and translate complex requirements into executable AV project plans.




- Expert-level troubleshooting skills with the ability to provide Tier 3 escalation support for complex AV, collaboration, and learning-space technology issues.
- Preferred qualifications include AVIXA CTS-D or CTS-I, AVIXA ANP or equivalent AV-over-IP certification, manufacturer programming certifications, Microsoft Teams Rooms design/deployment experience, DSP and video systems engineering expertise, Learning Space Manager knowledge, and accessibility-focused AV design experience.
