Senior Instrumentation and Control Systems Engineer

Position Overview

We are seeking a Senior Instrumentation and Control Systems Engineer for a one-year contract supporting liquids pipeline and natural gas facility projects across Canada and the United States.

The successful candidate will provide technical leadership and oversight for instrumentation, measurement, IT/OT communications and control systems. This role will independently coordinate internal stakeholders, third-party engineering firms, Main Automation Contractors, telecommunications providers, equipment vendors and construction teams throughout the project lifecycle.

Position Details

Location: Edmonton preferred; Calgary considered

Contract Duration: One year

Start Date: September 2026

Schedule: Hybrid – Monday, Tuesday and Thursday in office; Wednesday and Friday remote

Hours: 40 hours per week

Travel: Approximately 25%, including travel to Canadian and U.S. project sites

Rate: $84.37 per hour for a P.Eng.; engineering technologists may be considered at an adjusted rate

Candidates must be eligible to travel to the United States. A valid driver’s licence and satisfactory driver’s abstract are required.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead the development and oversight of instrumentation, measurement, IT/OT communications and control systems for assigned projects.
- Independently represent the I&C; discipline during milestone reviews, design reviews and technical discussions.
- Define project scope by engaging engineering, operations, construction, commissioning, SCADA, Control Centre, IT/OT, cybersecurity, procurement and other stakeholders.
- Oversee designs prepared by third-party engineering firms and Main Automation Contractors.
- Review engineering deliverables for compliance with project requirements, corporate standards, applicable codes, budget and schedule.
- Manage Main Automation Contractors and telecommunications service providers,



including scope, deliverables, milestones and technical performance.
- Review control philosophies, cause-and-effect diagrams, alarm-management strategies, shutdown systems, I/O assignments, control-panel designs and network communications.
- Facilitate control-system hazard assessments and participate in Process Hazard Analyses.
- Plan and participate in control-panel hardware and software factory acceptance testing.
- Participate in 3D-model reviews, constructability reviews, outage planning, inspections and field verification.
- Provide technical direction during construction, commissioning and start-up to ensure systems operate as designed.
- Support material requisitions, equipment specifications, procurement activities and technical bid evaluations.
- Monitor engineering progress and communicate cost, schedule, risk and technical issues to project leadership.
- Incorporate lessons learned to improve safety, reliability, operability and future project execution.
- Provide informal mentorship and technical guidance to peers.

- Pipeline valve sites
- Cooling facilities
- Storage tanks
- Terminals
- Liquids pipeline facilities
- Natural gas transmission and midstream facilities
- Related renewable-energy infrastructure

Required Qualifications:
- Engineering degree in instrumentation, electrical, chemical engineering, process controls or a related discipline; equivalent engineering technology qualifications may also be considered.




- At least 10 years of relevant engineering and project experience.
- Robust oil and gas, refining or petrochemical project experience.
- Extensive control systems knowledge, including control philosophies, cause-and-effect diagrams, alarm management, shutdown systems, I/O assignments and panel design.
- Experience overseeing control-system design deliverables without necessarily performing programming.
- Experience designing, selecting, testing and commissioning industrial control systems and network communications equipment.
- Knowledge of instrumentation design, specifications, sizing, procurement and technical evaluations.
- Experience with control-panel design and hardware and software FATs.
- Familiarity with Schneider, GE Rx3i, ControlLogix or comparable industrial control systems.
- Experience working with multidisciplinary engineering teams and external engineering contractors.
- Ability to independently manage multiple projects, priorities and stakeholder groups with minimal supervision.
- Strong written, verbal, documentation and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Valid driver’s licence and ability to provide a satisfactory driver’s abstract.
- Eligibility to travel to the United States.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in both client/owner and EPC or EPCM environments.
- Pipeline, terminal, LNG, liquids-handling or facilities experience.
- Experience managing Main Automation Contractors.
- Project-management knowledge or PMP certification.
- P.Eng. designation is preferred but not mandatory.
- Experience supporting commissioning and start-up activities at project sites.

During commissioning and start-up, travel assignments may extend for several days or weeks depending on project requirements.
