We are a fast-growing, data-driven e-commerce company hiring a part-time Shopify Developer to support our conversion rate optimization program, maintain site functionality, and help execute new website initiatives.
Your primary responsibility will be turning CRO strategies and test briefs into functional, responsive website experiences. You will work closely with our CRO Specialist to build landing pages, create test variations, improve existing sections, and implement winning changes across our Shopify stores.
You will also troubleshoot site issues, maintain integrations, improve performance, and support new campaigns, offers, products, and customer-experience initiatives.
This is a hands-on execution role. We need someone who can receive a clear brief, understand the intended outcome, identify the best technical approach, and complete the work accurately without requiring constant supervision.
What You’ll Do
- Support CRO Testing: Build and launch website variations based on briefs provided by our CRO Specialist.
- Develop Landing and Product Pages: Create responsive landing pages, advertorials, product pages, collection pages, and other conversion-focused experiences.
- Implement Winning Tests: Move successful experiments into the live Shopify theme cleanly and consistently.
- Build Reusable Sections: Develop flexible Shopify sections and blocks that non-technical team members can update without editing code.
- Maintain Site Functionality: Identify and resolve broken layouts, theme issues, mobile responsiveness problems, app conflicts, and other website bugs.
- Support New Initiatives: Handle the development work required for product launches, promotional campaigns, recent offers, bundles, upsells, subscriptions, and customer-experience improvements.
- Manage Shopify Integrations: Support applications and integrations related to subscriptions, email marketing, reviews, analytics, checkout, upsells, and other store functionality.
- Improve Site Performance: Reduce unnecessary code, improve loading speed, and protect site performance when adding new features or applications.
- Perform Quality Assurance: Test all work across desktop and mobile devices before publishing changes.
- Protect the Live Store: Use development themes, backups, version control,
and appropriate testing processes to avoid disrupting the customer experience.
- Document Your Work: Clearly explain what was changed, where it was changed, and how non-technical team members can manage it.
Our E-Commerce Stack
You do not need deep expertise in every tool, but familiarity across this type of stack is preferred:
- Shopify: Shopify Plus, Liquid, Online Store 2.0, theme architecture, sections, blocks, metafields, Shopify Functions, and Shopify APIs.
- Front-End Development: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, responsive design, and cross-browser testing.
- Page Building: GemPages or similar Shopify landing-page builders.
- Testing and CRO: Shopify-compatible A/B testing tools, analytics platforms, heatmaps, and session-recording tools.
- Applications and Integrations: Recharge, Klaviyo, Loox, upsell applications, bundling tools, analytics platforms, and checkout applications.
- Version Control: GitHub, theme duplication, development themes, and structured deployment processes.
- AI Tools: Claude, ChatGPT, and AI-assisted development tools.
- Project Management: Monday.com, Notion, Asana, Slack, or similar platforms.
Who This Is For
- You have strong Shopify experience: You can confidently work with Shopify themes, Liquid, sections, templates, metafields, and applications.
- You can execute from a brief: You can turn a Figma design, reference page, written CRO brief, or visual mockup into a functional Shopify experience.
- You understand CRO development: You know that accurate execution, page speed, mobile usability, and clean tracking can determine whether a test produces reliable results.
- You are comfortable with existing code: You can read, debug, improve, and extend an existing theme without needing to rebuild everything.
- You work independently: You can investigate issues, identify the root cause, and implement practical solutions without constant direction.
- You are detail-oriented: You notice spacing inconsistencies, responsive issues, broken interactions, and differences between the brief and the final implementation.
- You move quickly: You can ship clean, working solutions without over-engineering straightforward tasks.
- You communicate clearly: You provide progress updates, flag blockers early, and explain technical decisions in plain language.
- You use AI effectively: You use AI tools to develop and troubleshoot faster, while still understanding, reviewing, and testing the code yourself.
- You want a consistent part-time role: You are looking for an ongoing position rather than occasional one-off freelance projects.
What Success Looks Like
- CRO tests and website changes are completed accurately and on schedule.
- New test variations closely match the approved copy, design, and intended customer experience.
- Website issues are identified and resolved quickly.
- All changes work properly across desktop and mobile devices.
- Winning tests are implemented cleanly into the live theme.
- New features do not create unnecessary site-speed, tracking, or compatibility problems.
- Reusable sections make future site updates faster and easier.
- The CRO and marketing teams are not blocked by development delays.
Not a Fit If
- You only work on complete website builds and are not interested in ongoing improvements, testing, or maintenance.
- You need highly detailed technical instructions for every task and cannot determine an implementation approach independently.
- You cannot read or modify an existing Shopify theme.
- You rely entirely on AI-generated code without understanding or testing it.
- You do not test your work across desktop and mobile devices.
- You regularly make changes directly to the live theme without a safe development process.
- You struggle to communicate progress, timelines, or technical blockers.
- You are looking for a full-time salary or an agency-sized monthly retainer.
