Specialist Engineer – Self Generation

Annual salary: $ 131,100.00 - 165,800.00

What you'll do

- Specialist Engineer in Power Smart Engineering.
- Provide energy engineering expertise to BC Hydro’s commercial customers, BC Hydro Key Account Managers, Product

Managers, energy management consultants, vendors and trade allies.
- Ensure technical feasibility of customer projects for BC Hydro’s energy management programs.
- Provide specialist engineering expertise in Power Smart commercial and residential applications, with a focus on Self

Generation rates and distributed energy resources. Participate in energy efficiency, capacity program delivery and development.
- Carry out BC Hydro due diligence reviews on customer Self Generation and Distributed Energy Resource (DER) projects

associated with BC Hydro’s energy management programs.
- Assist and coach customers and vendors as they explore Solar and Battery Self Generation implementation projects.
- Participate in program development, including process maps, technical guidelines, calculation tools, workbooks, and

roadmaps.
- Prepare technical reports, program recommendations, presentations, and training materials for both technical and non-

technical audiences, internally and externally. Research, evaluate and pilot emerging energy technologies and industry trends that may create energy efficiency, distributed generation, or capacity opportunities.
- Participate in energy management initiative development and delivery including technology investigation, providing

engineering expertise, developing documentation and materials for program development.
- Participate and represent BC Hydro on industry technical committees, standards organizations, working groups, and

technical associations related to distributed energy resources and energy management. maintain and develop codes and standards that support product solutions.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal and relationship-management skills, building effective partnerships with internal and

external stakeholders and promoting BC Hydro programs and solutions.
- Provide technical guidance and coaching to customers throughout the identification, evaluation, and implementation of

energy management and Self Generation opportunities.
- Support the research, evaluation,



and field trials of emerging technologies that may create energy efficiency, distributed

generation, and capacity opportunities.
- Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders including customers, consultants, government organizations,

academic and research organizations.

The successful candidate will

- Act as a technical lead in the development of new product offers and enhancements to existing programs.
- Participate in customer and other external stakeholder negotiations and communications.
- Perform a due diligence review of the technical feasibility of customer Self Generation projects for BC Hydro’s programs

including inverters, battery storage systems, single line diagrams, site layout drawings and against Distribution Generation and program requirements.
- Manage and maintain the Qualified Product List (QPL) for inverters and battery storage products, ensuring compliance

with applicable standards and program requirements.
- Liaise with Product Operations and Distribution Planning on Self Generation project reviews, issue resolution, process

improvements, and reporting.
- Report on technical reviews for due diligence documentation and communication to stakeholders - conveying technical

and non-technical information: o Verify site layouts and single-line diagrams for compliance with program and technical requirements.

o Analyze improvement project costs and impacts (financial/economic).

o Participate in the technical evaluation of energy management related electrical systems.

o Produce and work with site-specific equipment inventories.

o Develop, compile, analyze and model demand and energy consumption data to evaluate project impacts and program outcomes.

o Provide energy-engineering expertise to BC Hydro’s commercial customers and energy managers.

- Provide demonstrated leadership skills and mentorship to other team members.
- Provide energy engineering expertise and liaise with internal and external customers and trade allies in the investigation

and development of energy conservation projects including the application of new or special engineering solutions.
- Participate in a diverse range of supply-side and demand-side initiatives supporting Product Management programs.
- Contribute to and work with an internal project database and file management system, and the ongoing maintenance and

development of engineering standards.
- Oversee, monitor, and act as a key representative for BC Hydro on technical committees and other research projects

conducted by consultants such as determining project approach and objectives, parameters, scope, cost, and other requirements.
- Maintain knowledge of industry technology development and reports on emerging technology and demonstration projects.

What you bring

- Engineering degree in Electrical, Electro-mechanical or a related discipline.
- Registered, or eligible for immediate registration,



as a Qualified Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists B.C.

(EGBC).
- 10+ yrs. experience in a relevant engineering field with demonstrated leadership experience.
- Strong ability to lead negotiations and engage with stakeholders to solve complex problems.
- Experience with the policies, industry codes and standards for distributed energy resources like solar, wind, and battery

storage.
- Experience evaluating inverter technologies and DER control systems and their impacts to the utility grid.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively within diverse teams and manage multiple concurrent tasks with varying degrees

of complexity.
- Experience in design and implementation of distributed energy resources, renewable energy systems, battery energy

storage systems (BESS), EV charging infrastructure, lighting and energy conservation measures would be an asset.
- Strong multi discipline energy engineering experience including the implementation of energy related projects in sectors

such as residential, municipal and commercial
- Well-developed and demonstrated working knowledge of spreadsheet, database, word processing and other relevant

software applications
- Experience performing techno-economic analyses of customer energy projects.
- Familiarity with Utility Rates structures and their application to customer energy and demand analyses.
- AEE – Certification in Energy Management would be an asset
- Familiarity with data analytics, artificial intelligence, and energy modelling
- Experience in Codes and Standards development, assessment and application
- Personal interest or passion for energy conservation and sustainable energy developments
- Experience with energy/utilities, energy management and related projects would be an asset
- Be customer focused – assisting and coaching our customers as they explore concepts, opportunities and implement

energy plans
- Be a team player and have exceptional interpersonal skills
- Be solutions focused
