Victim Services Punjabi Support Worker

Wage: $33.00 per hour

Part-Time: 21 hours per week, Monday to Friday

Temporary 6 months position (possibility of extension)

Job Summary:

The Victim Services Punjabi Support Worker provides culturally responsive support, information, and advocacy to South Asian Punjabi-speaking victims and survivors of partner assault, adult sexual assault, child and youth sexual assault, family violence, and criminal harassment. This role includes providing emotional support, crisis intervention, safety planning, referrals to community resources, and assistance navigating the criminal justice system. Fluency in Punjabi is required to ensure services can be provided effectively in Punjabi.

Your Role:

Archway’s Victim Services Punjabi Support Worker with the Multicultural Specialized Victim Assistance Program contributes by:

· Interviewing clients to help identify problems, making appropriate service plans, and outlining services that may be provided by the agency and other community organizations.

· Providing information to victims about their rights under the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA).

· Acting as an advocate for clients in the Criminal Justice System, providing support and preparing clients for the criminal court process.

· Supporting clients while they are in involved in the program and, as appropriate, providing follow-up support to them upon leaving the program.

· Accompanying clients to various justice related appointments including, income assistance office, pre-trial interviews with Crown Counsel and court accompaniment as needed.

· Providing problem solving, emotional and practical support, and crisis intervention to clients involved in the Criminal Justice System.

· Liaising with police, judiciary, corrections systems, and other community resources on behalf of the victims of domestic violence.

· Maintaining accurate and complete records on clients, maintaining the client tracking system, and providing monthly statistics to the supervisor.

· Reporting and discussing case planning and concerns with the supervisor.

· Maintaining a thorough knowledge of community resources to meet clients’ needs.

This position is an excellent fit for someone who is highly organized, able to work independently,



and has a solid understanding of the Criminal Justice System, Victim Services, and local community resources. The ideal candidate will possess strong Microsoft Office 365 skills, be knowledgeable about available community supports, and be fluent in Punjabi.

Getting an Interview – you will be considered if you have:

· A degree or diploma in a related field.

· Experience working with survivors of intimate partner violence.

· Program delivery experience.

· Some experience working in the social services sector.

· Fluency in both Punjabi and English.

· A valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and satisfactory driver’s abstract.

The Job Also Requires you to have:

· Strong written, verbal, and active listening skills; ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with people from a variety of backgrounds.

· Strong working knowledge of the Ministry of the Attorney Generals’ Violence Against Women in Relationships Policy.

· Knowledge of the theory, principles, practices, and recent issues relating to the Criminal Justice System and Victim Services.

· Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.

· Strong working knowledge of domestic violence related offences.

· Strong computer skills; ability to use Microsoft Office 365.

· Strong facilitation skills; ability to present information clearly and concisely.





· Ability to work with Archway’s Client Tracking System.

· Strong organization, planning, and time management skills.

· Knowledge of provincial programs and systems related to criminal justice is an asset.

· Strong knowledge of applicable legislation, policy, government and non-government systems is an asset.

· Ability to pass and maintain all security requirements requested by the Abbotsford Police Department.

· A satisfactory Criminal Records Check is a condition of employment.
