Technical Lead Toronto, ON Reporting into the Project Manager, the Technical Lead is responsible for supporting and driving the precise technical delivery of the Pape SOE Project. This role plays a critical part in the Engineering Department and works closely with designers, subcontractors, and the client. You will be responsible for leading the delivery of complex Support of Excavation (SOE), underpinning, and temporary works across multiple zones while managing a team of technical coordinators. As a key representative for GIP, you will oversee the interface between design and construction, ensuring engineering excellence and providing expert leadership in high-level technical and commercial discussions. The successful candidate will be an experienced Engineer with strong leadership capability, deep technical knowledge in underground/structural works, and the confidence to represent GIP in high-level technical and commercial discussions.
Summary Reporting into the Project Manager, the Technical Lead is responsible for supporting and driving the precise technical delivery of the Pape SOE Project. This role plays a critical part in the Engineering Department and works closely with designers, subcontractors, and the client. You will be responsible for leading the delivery of complex Support of Excavation (SOE), underpinning, and temporary works across multiple zones while managing a team of technical coordinators. As a key representative for GIP, you will oversee the interface between design and construction, ensuring engineering excellence and providing expert leadership in high-level technical and commercial discussions. The successful candidate will be an experienced Engineer with strong leadership capability, deep technical knowledge in underground/structural works, and the confidence to represent GIP in high-level technical and commercial discussions.
Technical Leadership Act as GIP’s technical authority on SOE, strutting, walers, underpinning, and temporary works. Oversee design development, review, and coordination with Engineers of Record (EOR), specialty designers, and internal teams. Lead resolution of technical issues, NCRs, RFIs, and remedial design matters. Ensure constructability, sequencing, and safety considerations are fully integrated into technical solutions.
Team Management Lead and mentor a team of 3–4 Technical Coordinators. Assign scopes, review deliverables, and ensure consistency and quality across technical submissions. Support development of staff through coaching and technical guidance.
Design & Submittals Manage shop drawings, connection designs, design memos,



and method statements. Ensure technical submittals meet contract requirements and are aligned with site conditions and construction sequencing. Coordinate as-built information and ensure fabrication and installation are not delayed by technical approvals.
Construction Interface Work closely with construction, commercial, and planning teams to support active works. Participate in site coordination, excavation sequencing reviews, and interface management with adjacent contractors. Lead technical input into work plans and phased construction approaches.
Client & Stakeholder Interface Represent GIP in technical meetings with Metrolinx, EORs, and third-party stakeholders. Coordinate interfaces with major subcontractors and design partners. Support commercial close-out of technical issues and changes with clear documentation.
Position Requirements Engineering background or equivalent experience. 10+ years experience in heavy civil, underground structures, transit, or major infrastructure projects. Strong background in:
Support of Excavation systems (struts, walers, soldier piles, secant piles)
Underpinning and temporary works
Complex structural steel interfaces and connections
Proven experience leading technical teams and coordinating multi-disciplinary designers. Strong understanding of construction staging, sequencing, and field constraints. Excellent communication skills with the ability to lead discussions with clients, engineers, and contractors.
What We Offer Expected Base Salary: $120,000-$170,000 per year.
The actual base salary will depend on several factors including experience, qualifications, internal equity, work location and market expectations.
