CPK Law is seeking an ambitious, capable and motivated Articling Student to join our Family Law & Litigation team.

This position is ideal for someone looking to develop strong advocacy, drafting, research and client-management skills in a busy practice environment.

Prior legal experience is not required, but some professional or relevant work experience is required. We are looking for someone who has demonstrated responsibility, organization, strong communication, judgment and the ability to work independently.

The Role The successful candidate will work closely with our lawyers on active family and litigation files and will have the opportunity to take on meaningful responsibility throughout their articles.

Responsibilities will include

- Conducting legal research and preparing legal memoranda
- Drafting pleadings, briefs, correspondence and other legal documents
- Assisting with family law matters, including parenting, support, property and separation-related issues
- Assisting with civil and commercial litigation matters
- Preparing for discoveries, motions, mediations and hearings
- Attending court, discoveries, mediations and client meetings where appropriate
- Communicating professionally with clients, opposing counsel and court staff
- Reviewing and organizing evidence and disclosure
- Assisting lawyers with file strategy and case preparation
- Managing deadlines and maintaining accurate electronic files
- Supporting lawyers with the day-to-day carriage of files
- Taking on increasing responsibility as your knowledge and skills develop

What We're Looking For

We are looking for someone who is:

- Eligible to article in Ontario




- Able to demonstrate prior professional or relevant work experience — this does not necessarily need to be legal experience
- Highly organized and able to manage competing priorities
- A robust legal researcher and writer
- An excellent communicator
- Detail-oriented and able to exercise sound judgment
- Comfortable working independently in a hybrid environment
- Resilient and able to work in a fast-paced practice
- Curious, proactive and willing to ask questions
- Interested in developing a career in family law and litigation
- Professional, dependable and committed to excellent client service

Experience in a law firm is an asset, but is not required. We are interested in candidates who can demonstrate transferable skills through prior employment, business, government, nonprofit, academic, customer-service or other professional experience.
