Reporting To

Mental Health Lead: under the direction of the Senior Manager of Student Mental Health Supports and Services.

Description The contract Child and Youth Worker will support the social-emotional learning of students in Grades 1-8 who exhibit Tier 3 complex behavioural challenges. In a dedicated HWCDSB school space, the Child and Youth Worker (CYW) will implement evidence-informed strategies to develop students' self-regulation, coping skills, positive relationships, and sustained engagement in learning within the classroom environment. Students in the program present with significant social, emotional, behavioural, and/or mental health challenges that adversely impact their educational experiences and require dedicated and targeted support.

The CYW collaborates with HWCDSB central and school staff, and with parents/guardians and community partners.

The Contract CYW works in a Catholic school environment where the centrality of Jesus Christ permeates all aspects of school life. Program delivery will occur both within and outside of the classroom setting, during both instructional and non-instructional time (e.g., lunchtime). This work does not involve clinical counselling.

Key Responsibilities In addition to the descriptor above, the CYW will

Support the implementation of behaviour support plans and safety plans.

Conduct observations and gather relevant information to inform intervention planning.

Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation support as required.

Support return to home school transitions.

Maintain accurate documentation and records in accordance with board policies and professional standards.

Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student progress and support strategies.





Participate in school-based and multidisciplinary team meetings.

Contributes to an inclusive Catholic school climate in alignment with the principles of dignity of the human person, equity and student well-being.

Assume other duties/responsibilities related to student needs as determined by the Mental Health Lead and/or the Senior Manager of Student Mental Health Supports and Services.

Qualifications: (Applicants shall possess the following as of date of posting)

Child and Youth Worker diploma (college level) or Child and Youth Care degree (university level) or equivalent, from a recognized institution;

Eligibility for membership in the Ontario Association of Child and Youth Care.

Preference will be given to the candidate who possesses the following:

A minimum of three years of successful experience as a Child and Youth Worker working with children/youth with complex needs;

Comprehensive understanding of the developmental needs of children/youth;

Behaviour Management Systems (BMS) certified or willingness to be trained;

ABA training from a recognized institution;

Experience in the application of principles of ABA;

Skill and comfort in contributing to a multi-disciplinary team

Familiarity with the Education Act, the Child and Family Services Act, and the Child, Youth and Family Services Act, 2017;

Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work professionally as a member of a Catholic professional learning community with staff, students, and parents;

Excellent oral and written communication skills;





Ability to take initiative;

Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality as mandated by relevant legislation;

Strong computer literacy skills;

Awareness of community-based supports for students with exceptionalities.

Applicants Must Have a valid class “G” Ontario Driver’s license and reliable vehicle as daily travel from school to school is required for assignments;

the ability to travel to any school within the HWCDSB jurisdiction.

Salary

CUPE Category 9 ($33.00 - $37.21) plus vacation
