Senior Designer
Shopwell Design | Remote (Canada) | Full-Time
About Us
Shopwell Design is a boutique digital experience design studio working closely with direct-to-consumer and e-commerce businesses of varying sizes. We work with some of the most exciting and ambitious retail brands, taking projects from brand strategy through to a beautiful, functional shopping experience. Our team operates fully remote across Canada, and we care as much about how we work together as what we ship.
The Role
We're looking for a Senior Designer who designs with extremely strong and confident instincts, and a genuine love of ecommerce, UI/UX and brand work. You should be just as comfortable building out a distinctive brand identity as you are architecting a high-converting Shopify experience — and you bring the same creative ambition to both. We want someone who pushes past template thinking and conventional aesthetics, who has strong opinions about what makes a design work, and who isn't afraid to defend a bold idea in front of a client.
This is a senior individual-contributor role for someone who loves being hands-on in Figma (and comfortable getting hands-on in Shopify itself), but is equally at home chatting with clients and stakeholders, translating goals and research into design decisions that hold up under scrutiny — and that don't look like everyone else's.
You will join a Design team, work with talented Project Managers, and collaborate with an expert Development team to bring your ideas to life.
Responsibilities
- Own the design process on your projects — from understanding stakeholder requirements and project concepts through wireframes, prototypes, and final, dev-ready designs
- Design and art-direct branding and identity work — logos, visual systems, typography,
and brand guidelines — alongside ecommerce and digital product design
- Create confident, opinionated UI/UX for ecommerce experiences, as well as non-ecommerce digital and print design (campaigns, decks, social, marketing collateral)
- Push boundaries — bring bold, unconventional design solutions rather than defaulting to safe or expected patterns; help the studio's work stand out
- Design and build custom Shopify experiences, and confidently customize and extend existing Shopify themes to match a brand's vision
- Present your work directly to clients, lead design discussions, and confidently explain and defend your decisions
- Respectfully challenge the status quo — push clients and colleagues to consider better, more creative solutions when it matters
- Partner with the Creative Director and project leads to help define project requirements and scope
- Pressure-test your own work for edge cases and hand off clean, well-documented files that minimize unknowns for developers
- Give feedback to and mentor junior and intermediate designers on the team, and incorporate feedback from others into your own work
- Stay current on desktop and mobile design trends, tools, and best practices across web, mobile, and iOS
- Help promote an inspiring, inclusive, and collaborative team culture
Required Experience
- 4–6+ years of design experience, with strong,
demonstrable range across ecommerce/DTC and branding or non-ecommerce work
- Extremely strong, confident UI/UX skills — a portfolio that shows sharp instincts, not just clean execution
- Real branding and identity design experience — you can build a visual language from the ground up, not just apply one
- A portfolio that reflects bold, creative point of view — work that doesn't conform to conventional or templated aesthetics
- Comfortable designing custom Shopify experiences and confidently customizing existing Shopify themes (liquid/theme structure familiarity a plus)
- Strong command of Figma and modern design tools
- Fluency in translating stakeholder goals, user research, and requirements into an exceptional, distinctive design experience
- Comfortable presenting and defending bold design decisions directly to clients and stakeholders
- Strong attention to detail — you catch the edge cases and inconsistencies before development does
- Excellent command of visual fundamentals: typography, layout, color, and grid systems
Nice-to-Have
- Interaction and/or prototyping design experience
- Comfort with ambiguity — client briefs that raise more questions than answers, and a willingness to try things out
- Experience mentoring or reviewing the work of junior designers
- An entrepreneurial, scrappy mindset — many of our clients are startups
- Basic knowledge of animation, video editing, or online marketing
Compensation & Benefits
- Compensation discussed on interview
- Comprehensive benefits package
- Flexible PTO
- Office closed over the winter holidays
- Remote-first culture — open to applicants across Canada
Shopwell Design is an equal chance employer. We welcome applications from all qualified candidates.
