Safety Officer – Industrial Construction

From mine sites to major industrial plants, Breck delivers construction services across the mining, oil & gas, power generation, and heavy industrial sectors. We specialize in long-term maintenance, inspections, shutdowns, upgrades, and large-scale expansions.

Headquartered in Saskatoon, our teams work across Saskatchewan and Ontario and have built a reputation for getting the job done safely, efficiently, and with pride. We are looking for an experienced Safety Officer to support our industrial construction operations in the field. This is a hands-on site-based role for someone who understands industrial construction, is comfortable working alongside field crews, and knows how to turn safety requirements into practical actions on the jobsite.

The Opportunity

The Safety Officer supports Breck's health and safety program on active industrial construction sites. Working primarily in the field, you'll identify hazards, conduct inspections, support incident investigations, monitor safety documentation, and work with site leadership to improve safety performance. You'll maintain a visible and proactive presence on site, with the authority to stop work when a serious safety concern or imminent danger exists and ensure corrective action is taken before work resumes.

What You'll Support

A strong safety program starts with being present where the work is happening.

You'll:

- Maintain a visible and proactive safety presence on site.
- Conduct field inspections, identify hazards, and ensure appropriate controls are in place.
- Work with supervisors and Forepeople to address safety deficiencies and support safe work practices.
- Participate in pre-job planning and higher-risk activities.
- Stop work when imminent danger or serious safety concerns exist.
- Promote hazard reporting and employee participation in safety initiatives.

Hazard Assessment & Safe Work Practices

You'll help make sure hazards are identified before work begins and controls remain effective as conditions change.

You'll:

- Review FLHAs and task-specific hazard assessments to ensure hazards and controls are understood.
- Assess higher-risk activities and changing site conditions for potential hazards.
- Work with supervision to correct deficiencies and implement appropriate controls.
- Reinforce Breck policies, safe work practices, and client requirements.

Inspections & Safety Documentation

You'll help ensure safety requirements are being completed properly, not simply checked off.

You'll:

- Conduct site inspections and ensure identified deficiencies are corrected.
- Review safety documentation and monitor consistent SiteDocs compliance.
- Verify vehicle, equipment, tool,

and safety-device inspections are completed.
- Maintain accurate safety records and follow up on incomplete or non-compliant documentation.
- Assist with internal and client safety audits as required

Incident Investigation & Corrective Action

When something happens, you'll help the team understand why and prevent it from happening again.

You'll:

- Respond to and investigate incidents, near misses, injuries, property damage, and other safety events.
- Gather and document relevant information to identify causes and contributing factors.
- Work with supervision to develop and track corrective actions through completion.
- Communicate findings to leadership and identify recurring safety trends or concerns.

Orientations, Training & Safety Meetings

You'll help make sure employees understand what is expected before they begin work.

You'll:

- Deliver site orientations and communicate Breck and client safety requirements.
- Participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and pre-job meetings.
- Provide safety coaching and support supervisors in communicating safety requirements.
- Verify employee training and certifications and identify additional training needs.

Working with Leadership

Safety works best when Operations and Safety work together.

You'll:

- Build strong working relationships with Project Managers, Superintendents, Supervisors, Forepeople, and field employees
- Provide practical safety guidance to field leadership
- Communicate safety concerns clearly and respectfully
- Follow up on identified deficiencies and corrective actions
- Escalate significant or recurring safety concerns when required
- Participate in project and safety meetings
- Support site leadership in meeting Breck and client safety expectations
- Help create a workplace where employees are comfortable identifying hazards and raising safety concerns

What We're Looking For

We're looking for an experienced industrial construction safety professional who understands that effective safety requires both technical knowledge and the ability to work well with people in the field.

You'll be a strong fit if you:

- Hold a National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) designation
- Have 5+ years of safety experience within industrial construction environments
- Have direct experience working on industrial construction, maintenance, shutdown, turnaround, mining,

oil & gas, power generation, or heavy industrial projects
- Have strong working knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation and industrial construction safety requirements
- Have experience completing field inspections, hazard assessments, and incident investigations
- Understand industrial construction hazards and practical methods for controlling risk
- Can confidently address unsafe work and have difficult safety conversations when required
- Are organized and able to maintain accurate safety documentation and follow up on outstanding items
- Have experience with electronic safety management systems such as SiteDocs or similar platforms
- Are comfortable using Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and other standard workplace technology
- Hold current First Aid certification
- Hold or are able to obtain Fall Protection and Confined Space Entry/Monitoring certification
- Hold a valid Class 5 Driver's Licence with an acceptable driving record
- Can obtain required client and site pre-access clearance
- Are willing and able to travel to active industrial jobsites as required
