Reporting to the Vice President of Software Development, the Director of Software Development will lead an engineering team of approximately eight professionals across software development, quality assurance, architecture, and project delivery. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who has successfully guided a team through a scale-up phase and understands how to balance people leadership, technical direction, product delivery, security, and compliance.
The successful candidate will bring a strong engineering foundation and the ability to remain close enough to the technology to review code, guide architectural decisions, and contribute when needed. They will also bring a forward-thinking approach to the evolving role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC), helping the team thoughtfully adopt tools and practices that improve efficiency without compromising quality, security, or accountability.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The key job functions are:
- Lead, mentor, and develop an engineering team while establishing a strong culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Recruit and develop software professionals, establish clear performance expectations, and support career development across the team.
- Set technical direction and architectural standards in partnership with senior technology and product leadership.
- Remain hands-on with the technology by reviewing production code,
guiding implementation decisions, and contributing to critical development initiatives when required.
- Lead the team through product development and delivery, balancing technical priorities, timelines, resources, and business objectives.
- Oversee sprint planning, technical roadmaps, delivery milestones, and the identification and mitigation of technical risks.
- Champion engineering standards related to code quality, testing, security, documentation, and maintainability.
- Evaluate and implement appropriate Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools across the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC), including development, testing, code review, documentation, and deployment.
- Partner with Product, Design, Compliance, and executive leadership to translate business objectives into effective technical execution.
- Support infrastructure and development platform decisions that enable the engineering team to operate effectively as the organization scales.
- Ensure software development practices support applicable privacy, security, and regulatory requirements across multiple jurisdictions.
- Monitor team health, delivery performance, technical risks, and development priorities, providing regular updates to executive leadership.
- Identify opportunities to improve engineering processes, team structure, technology, and delivery practices as the organization continues to scale.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline is preferred.
- Equivalent education combined with significant software development leadership experience will be considered.
Qualifications:
- Successful completion of a clear background check is required.
Experience:
- Minimum 5 years of experience leading and managing software development teams.
- Demonstrated experience hiring, mentoring, developing, and managing the performance of technical professionals.
- Previous experience leading a team through a scale-up or significant growth phase is strongly preferred.
- Experience in a senior software development, engineering management, technical leadership, or similar role.
- Experience leading the development and delivery of a software product is required.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams including Product, Design, Quality Assurance (QA), Compliance, and executive leadership.
- Experience with privacy, security, or regulatory requirements within healthcare, financial services, public safety, or another regulated industry is an asset.
- Experience supporting software products with international users, deployments, or regulatory considerations is an asset.

- Resilience: Comfortable providing an informed point of view, challenging decisions when appropriate, and maintaining confidence in a fast-moving environment.
- Collaboration: Ability to build strong relationships across technology, product, compliance, and executive teams.
Base Salary: $150,000 – $175,000 per year
- Salary will be based on the successful candidate’s experience, technical expertise, leadership capabilities, and overall fit for the role.

Work Hours:
- Full-time, permanent position.
- Monday – Friday.
- Hybrid work arrangement available following an initial three-month period.

- This opportunity does not include relocation. It will be the responsibility of the candidate should relocation be required.

Pay: $150,000.00-$175,000.00 per year
