Job Title: Residence Assistant

Purpose:

The Residence Staff Member is a key contributor to Alberta Ballet School team ensuring a welcoming environment and safe operation for our students living at residence. Our students attend our School full time and are from around the world and across Canada.

This position executes all aspects of residence life ranging from general supervision, doctor’s appointments, emergency hospital visits, taking care of sick students, emotional support, adherence of residence rules, light housekeeping and kitchen duties, chaperoning events and assistance required by the School.

The Residence Assistant role will report directly to the Head of Residence and will also work closely with Residence Coordinators and Kitchen Assistants onsite.

We are seeking candidates who are interested in working 30+ hours per week on a regular basis. Employees who are employed consistently at thirty (30) hours per week or more are eligible for additional compensation and benefits.

Responsibilities:

- Ensure availability to students at any time during shifts.

- Support the well-being of the students in the residential setting and assist with all elements of residential care, including personal hygiene, laundry, minor household maintenance, order and cleanliness, and accommodation upkeep.

- Provide appropriate support for students during emotional and physical crises.

- Discourage students from engaging in inappropriate conduct or any other activity that could harm other students or bring Alberta Ballet School into disrepute.

- Assist with preparing, supervising, and cleaning up meal service.

- Perform light housekeeping and kitchen duties.

- Work with the students to establish weekly meal choices and complete the summary.

- Keep the residence up to date and assist with changing decorations and artwork.

- Encourage an inclusive environment by assisting with and coordinating group activities, identifying activities of interest to students, and exploring alternative areas of interest.

- Demonstrate sensitivity to and respect the rights of the individual students,



attending to their emotional and physical needs as required.

- Serve as a role model, advocate and mentor to the individuals we support.

- Remain on call when working the night shift from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.

- Assist with general maintenance and cleaning during turnover between residence closures and summer schools.

- Refer higher level conflict matters with School, Parents or students to the Residence Coordinator or Head of Residence for mitigation.

- Follow Occupational Health and Safety, First Aid, Food Secure, and universal precaution guidelines and procedures.

- Attend to students' healthcare needs and refer to medical services when appropriate.

- Escort students to medical appointments as required.

- Communicate emergency situations to co-workers and the supervisor promptly and effectively, and complete all required documentation accurately and on time.

- Communicate with other staff members through the communication logbook during each shift.

- Complete light administrative duties as required.

Qualifications & Key Competencies

- Demonstrate experience working with and providing care to youth ages 12 to 20 in a residential life setting, such as post-secondary housing, a boarding school, or shared residence services; this experience is considered an asset.

- Hold a current Standard First Aid and CPR certificate

- Hold at least a high school diploma; a certificate in child care or another social or support field is considered an asset.

- Maintain reliable transportation and a valid driver’s licence.

- Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build rapport and mentoring relationships.

- Work effectively under pressure and adapt to changing circumstances.

- Work effectively within a diverse, multicultural, and supportive environment.





- Demonstrate knowledge of or interest in youth development and the performing arts.

- Collaborate effectively as part of a team while remaining self-motivated and able to work independently.

- Demonstrate sound time-management and prioritization skills.

- Candidates must pass a criminal and vulnerable sector check.

- Work within a 24/7 student residence operation that closes twice each year for Christmas break and during August.

- Work regular evening, weekend, and overnight shifts, including most national holidays.

Working Conditions / physical requirements

§ Stand, walk, use hands, speak, and hear regularly while performing the duties of this role, and occasionally lift or move up to 15 pounds.

§ Remain available for one on-call shift per week to cover student or employee illnesses.
