SALES ASSOCIATE, Yard person

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Sales Associate and yard person is responsible for providing prompt, courteous and efficient service to customers. Advise customers on appropriate merchandise and related items; processing transactions (cash, credit card, debit card) using retail software; ticketing and replenishing merchandise, cycle counting; general housekeeping of shelves, loss prevention, merchandising, restocking and staying current with trends in the industry. Load, unload, and store materials using a variety of equipment including forklifts, pallet jacks, carts, etc. They also greet and serve yard customers with loading vehicles/trailers and should be familiar with inventory, prices, return and exchange policies. Yard tasks also include general property upkeep. This opening will be primarily focused on the hardware product lines including: plumbing, electrical, tools, and fasteners, plus garden centre products as seasonally required.

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Assist customers in locating and comparing merchandise in store, yard, and on homehardware.ca, as well as processing special orders for non-stock or out of stock items
- Ensure customers are greeted within 30 seconds of entering the store or your department.
- Determine customer’s needs by asking open-ended questions.
- Communicate product knowledge to the customer as appropriate.




- Assist customers with handling and carrying out large or heavy items.
- Relieve as cashier when necessary.
- Follow procedures and maintain standards according to store policy in the following areas: receiving and pricing goods, merchandise handling and presentation, housekeeping, reordering merchandise, restocking shelves and handling cash.
- Advise the designated manager of shortages, damaged goods, back orders etc.
- Change prices on merchandise, bins, displays, etc. as necessary.
- Build special displays and signage for sales, promotions and other special events.
- Remove sales and promotional displays, prices etc. and rearrange stock following promotional events.
- Always take appropriate safety precautions when cutting pipe, glass, wire mesh, making keys etc., and make an effort to minimize waste.
- Help load or unload incoming trucks.
- Keep stock in storage area neat, clean, and orderly.
- Participate in regular cycle counting.
- Attend store meetings, training sessions, etc. as required.
- Work on special projects or duties as assigned by department manager.
- Work in a safe manner in accordance with provincial and federal safety legislation when handling freight, tools and equipment, as well as use of good common sense.



Report any potential hazards and unsafe behavior to management to have the situation corrected.
- Store material in the correct location in the yard.
- Keep the yard clean and the inventory neat and orderly.
- Be familiar with the locations of all inventory and equipment.
- Be familiar with the safe operation and maintenance of equipment, including a forklift, pallet jack, etc.
- Resolve customer complaints.
- Be aware of theft and act, in line with company policy, to report or discourage it.
- Help in training new employees.

QUALIFICATIONS:

- Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends, evenings and holidays.
- Friendly and helpful attitude toward customers.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Class 5 Driver’s License
- High School graduation or equivalent.
- Willingness to learn.
- Prior retail experience is beneficial.
- Creative abilities for making attractive in-store displays.
- Willingness to continually develop qualified skills and knowledge base.
- Ability to work co-operatively in a team atmosphere.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

- Reports directly to the Store Manager.
