Royal Victoria Yacht Club is seeking a Marine Technician with specialized expertise in small boat fiberglass maintenance and repairs, outboard motor maintenance and service coordination, and regulatory compliance to keep our watercraft safe, reliable, and functional.

Job Description: Boat / Marine Technician

Position Overview

The Boat / Marine Technician manages the operational readiness of the club’s fleet, with a heavy emphasis on preventative powerboat maintenance, composite care, and upkeep of small boats. This role focuses on small fiberglass repairs, routine powerboat servicing, inflatable hull repairs, and meticulous record-keeping, while ensuring applicable vessels fully comply with Transport Canada (TC) safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

- Fiberglass & Coatings: Perform expert small boat fiberglass repairs, gelcoat color-matching, structural laminating, and marine painting/coatings.
- Powerboat Maintenance: Execute routine servicing for outboard engines, including oil changes, spark plugs, impellers and fuel systems.
- Transport Canada Compliance: Conduct regular safety audits to ensure all fleet vessels strictly meet Transport Canada small vessel regulations, including safety equipment.
- Service Coordination: Identify major mechanical failures and coordinate with external marine mechanics to schedule complex repairs.
- Inflatable Fleet Care: Diagnose and patch leaks, replace valves, and repair structural transoms on rigid hull inflatable boats (RIBs).
- Maintenance Records:



Maintain detailed logs tracking all completed services, parts replaced, hours run, and safety inspection certificates for every club asset.
- System Troubleshooting: Test and repair basic 12V DC marine electrical networks, bilge pumps, running lights, and steering systems.

Required Qualifications & Skills

- Experience: Minimum of 2–3 years specializing in fiberglass repair, composite manufacturing, or general marine fleet maintenance.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with Transport Canada Small Vessel Regulations, safety equipment carriage requirements, and mandatory registration/marking standards.
- Composite Expertise: Proven proficiency handling epoxy, polyester resins, fiberglass cloth layup, gelcoat blending, and fairing.
- Inflatable Repair Skills: Hands-on experience working with Hypalon and PVC fabrics, specialized adhesives, and tube pressure testing.
- Technical Savvy: High organization skills required to maintain clean, accurate, and easily auditable maintenance and compliance records.
- Engine Foundations: Solid fundamental knowledge of outboard engines to handle basic preventative maintenance and diagnose when external service is needed.
- Certifications: Must possess a valid Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) or SVOP. Marine industry certifications or Trade Qualification (TQ) pieces are a major asset.

This position is a .75 FTE with a blend of full-time and part-time hours over the year.

Pay: $35.00-$45.00 per hour
