Supplier Quality & Inspection Manager

The Supplier Quality & Inspection Manager provides hands-on leadership to the Supplier Quality Engineering (SQE) and Inspection teams within an AS9100-certified aerospace manufacturing environment. This role ensures all purchased materials, components, and internally manufactured products conform to engineering drawings, customer requirements, military specifications, and the organization's Quality Management System (QMS). The ideal candidate combines experience in Supplier Quality Engineering activities such as supplier auditing, deep technical expertise in dimensional inspection (GD&T;, CMM programming), and strong people leadership to drive continuous improvement and mitigate risk across the supply chain.

What does a Supplier Quality & Inspection Manager do?

Supplier Quality Engineering & Performance

- Manage the SQE function to establish, monitor, and enforce supplier quality performance expectations.
- Track supplier metrics including acceptance rates, defects, escapes, SCAR responsiveness, and delivery-related quality issues.
- Conduct supplier audits and risk assessments globally to qualify, approve, and maintain the Approved Supplier List (ASL) within the ERP system.
- Drive supplier development plans and collaborate with Purchasing and Operations to resolve recurring vendor bottlenecks or quality trends.

Aerospace Compliance & FAI Management (AS9100 / AS9102)

- Oversee the supplier First Article Inspection (FAI) process, ensuring all supplier FAI packages comply with AS9102, drawings, and customer requirements.
- Validate objective evidence within FAI packages, including material test reports (MTRs), Certificates of Conformance (CoC), and special process certifications.
- Resolve FAI deficiencies by partnering directly with suppliers, Engineering, and Purchasing to achieve timely approvals.
- Support the QMS by maintaining accurate, traceable quality records and actively participating in internal, customer, and regulatory certification audits.

Inspection Operations & Metrology Leadership

- Oversee daily operations for Incoming Inspection, Final Inspection, and the CMM lab.
- Provide technical guidance to inspectors on complex precision measurements, GD&T; interpretation, and CMM programming workflows.
- Standardize inspection methods by developing and maintaining clear process flowcharts, work instructions,



and procedures.

NCR, MRB, & Corrective Actions

- Chair the Material Review Board (MRB) to ensure nonconforming products are properly identified, segregated, and dispositioned.
- Audit Nonconformance Reports (NCRs/MRRs) for technical accuracy and aggressively manage open items to ensure closure within established thresholds
- Lead root-cause investigations for internal escapes, supplier issues, and customer complaints using structured problem-solving methodologies (e.g., 5-Why, 8D).
- Implement systemic Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) and mathematically verify their long-term effectiveness via performance data.

Qualifications & Experience

Education & Core Experience

- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, or a related technical discipline (equivalent experience will be considered).
- 5+ years of progressive experience in an aerospace manufacturing environment (AS9100) in quality engineering, supplier quality, or manufacturing inspection.
- 2+ years demonstrated experience in a supervisory, team lead, or management role.

Technical Skills

- Blueprints & Metrology: Advanced understanding of GD&T;, engineering drawings, dimensional inspection equipment, and precision measurement techniques.
- CMM Expertise: Practical experience with CMM programming and operation; Zeiss Calypso experience is highly desirable.
- Standards & Documentation: Deep, practical knowledge of AS9102 FAI requirements, structured root-cause analysis (8D, Ishikawa, 5-Why) and formal aerospace quality practices.
- Quality Tools: Hands-on experience managing NCR, MRB, SCAR, and CAPA systems using structured root-cause analysis (e.g., 8D, 5-Why).
- Auditing: Proven experience conducting technical supplier quality audits (on-site and remote).
- Software: Proficiency with Microsoft Office and specialized quality management/inspection software.
- Systems: Familiarity operating within an ERP environment to manage Approved Supplier Lists and quality documentation.

Preferred Skills/Experience

- Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt.
- Experience conducting supplier audits.
- Experience with XRF or material identification equipment.
- Experience with advanced CMM programming, including Calypso Advanced and PCM.
- Experience in aerospace, defense, or other highly regulated manufacturing environments.
- Experience with supplier development and supplier performance-management programs.
- Experience with APQP, PPAP, or similar advanced quality-planning methodologies.
- Experience with ERP/MRP and electronic quality-management systems.
- Lead Auditor training or certification for AS9100/ISO 9001.




- Experience with statistical process control (SPC), MSA/Gage R&R;, capability studies, and statistical analysis.
- Ability to thrive in a rapid-paced, deadline-driven manufacturing environment.
- Strong analytical, project management, and verbal/written communication skills.

Working Conditions

This position operates in a manufacturing environment and requires regular interaction with production, inspection, engineering, warehouse, and supplier personnel. This role may require extended periods of standing and walking throughout manufacturing and inspection areas, as well as regular computer-based work.
